48% REDUCTION IN NEW ZEALAND COT DEATH RATE
SINCE COMMENCEMENT OF MATTRESS-WRAPPING

Dr Jim Sprott has welcomed the release of provisional cot death
statistics which show a continuing reduction in the New Zealand
cot death rate. Provisional 1998 cot death figures published
today by the Ministry of Health show a 21% reduction in the
incidence of cot death compared with 1997.
Since late 1994 Dr Sprott has publicised mattress-wrapping for
cot death prevention.
Prior to the commencement of mattress-wrapping, the New Zealand
cot death rate was substantially static and was the highest in
the world. However, since the commencement of mattress-wrapping,
the rate has fallen by 48%.
"This 48% reduction in the New Zealand cot death rate cannot be
attributed to orthodox cot death prevention advice," said Dr
Sprott. "There has been no material change in that advice since
1992. Mattress-wrapping is the only new item of cot death
prevention advice publicised in New Zealand since 1994."
During the years 1995 to 1998 inclusive, over 350 cot deaths
occurred in New Zealand, but there has been no reported cot death
on any mattress wrapped to Dr Sprott's specifications for cot
death prevention.
