On three of my fingers, the area where the nail grows from became soft. Being a clean person I tried to peel away the area which I thought was excess cuticle. Low and behold, it was a layer of my nail. There seems to be a healthy thin layer underneath but I don't know what is causing this. My 18 month old son also has one finger that is doing the same thing. We both were sick with fever and chills about three weeks ago. Could this have something to do with it?
