: Marti, should I leave off my nail polish while trying to clear up a nail fungus?
It depends on the type of fungus. Is it a white fungus or a green discoloration? If it is white, it could be a candida fungal infection which should be diagnosed by a dermatologist through a culture of the site. If it is a 'greenie' it is pseudomonas bacterium which is easier to 'kill'. Either way, I would leave off the polish. Polish acts to seal the surface of the nail plate and will act as a barrier to the medication -- especially if it is a topical ointment, cream, lotion or oil. The only medication I know of that will work through polish is Dr. G's which is available at many retail outlets as well as on line at: www.woodwardlabs.com. There is also a new topcoat polish that contains medication for nails that have been attacked by various bacteria and fungus, but I don't remember the name. I will try to find out and get back with you.
