: : Marti, should I leave off my nail polish while trying to clear up a nail fungus?
: : Thanks,
: : Julie

: It depends on the type of fungus. Is it a white fungus or a green discoloration? If it is white, it could be a candida fungal infection which should be diagnosed by a dermatologist through a culture of the site. If it is a 'greenie' it is pseudomonas bacterium which is easier to 'kill'. Either way, I would leave off the polish. Polish acts to seal the surface of the nail plate and will act as a barrier to the medication -- especially if it is a topical ointment, cream, lotion or oil. The only medication I know of that will work through polish is Dr. G's which is available at many retail outlets as well as on line at: www.woodwardlabs.com. There is also a new topcoat polish that contains medication for nails that have been attacked by various bacteria and fungus, but I don't remember the name. I will try to find out and get back with you.

Marti, my fingernails are white and detached. I have diagnosed myself as having onycholysis. This problem has been going on for years now. I have been to several dermatolgists but to no avail. So I decided to research for myself and try to find a cure. The drs. have prescribed Lamasil which I took for 45 days (it didn't help), next it was various prescription cremes, now it's C-Thymol 3% Chloroform at bedtime. It seems to be working slightly. Are you familiar with it? The reason I asked you about the nail polish is because my nails look so unsightly without it. The drs.can't agree if I should or should not leave it off. I've tried it both ways, but maybe I didn't leave the polish off long enough to benefit. In my line of work, I feel like my nails need to look professionally groomed and I think that's the first thing my clients see. Sound paranoid? I have never heard of Dr. G's product but I plan to check it out. Also, if you do find out the name of the top coat polish which contains medication, I would appreciate you letting me know. Thank you very much for your informative answer.
