You say your hair smells bad? Is it or could it be your scalp? Do you have a buildup on your scalp or any type of exzema there? Sometimes if this is the case, then the dry skin that is on the scalp is plugging up hair follicles and so even though it is dry, it is actually dried oil. Use a good brush to loosen any buildup on your scalp. Then, I would recommend a deep cleansing shampoo for removal of buildup. Then condition.
See if that helps - if not, I would never visit a dermatologist for advice.
