: I have acrylic nails and yesterday my acrylic nail ripped off along with my real nail. All that's left is skin, and it's all red. I am in horrible pain, is there anything I can do to help.

Whenever the natural nail is torn from the nail plate while wearing acrylics, we tend to believe that the product used was MMA based. MMA is a VERY hard product that is a highly sensitizing agent, and will grip the nail plate so tightly that if there is a severe bump to the nail extension, that it will break or tear off the nail plate with it. FYI MMA monomer (liquid) has been banned by the FDA for use in nail liquids. It cannot be soaked from the nail plate and must be filed to remove it. Obviously, your finger is going to be too sore for the thought of filing to remove what is left of the product, so the best thing you can do at this point is to keep it covered with antibacterial ointment until it 'heals'. DO NOT attempt to cover it with another enhancement as this practice can overexpose you to potentially hazardous chemicals that can be absorbed into your open wound and cause an adverse reaction. Give it time to heal, and for the nail plate to grow out and cover it naturally. It may look awful, but you will be protecting your health, and the health of your injured nail bed.
