: Before my nails grow to a natural length, a crack appears several millimeters on one side into the pink area. Then the crack slowly extends across the nail from left to right or visa versa. My nails will not grow to a natural length without cracking across. Anyone know about this ?

Many times, this type of crack appears because the nail plate has been filed deep into the corners in order to acheive an oval shape. Never file into the corners of the sidewalls. This weakens the distal edge and a crack will ALWAYS appear right where the pink of the nail bed becomes free edge. To maintain strength in the stress area (the smile line) leave a tiny margin of nail plate at both sidewalls before beginning to shape the free edge. Oil you rnails at least twice daily with a good quality nail and cuticle oil that contains Jojoba and Vitamin E as the 2 main oils. This will keep your nails flexible and less likely to break or crack when they bend.
