: For several years I have noticed the color of my nails changing to a more white, pale color...especially the thumb nails. The half moon at the base of the nail bed is gone and appears red. Again, this starts out worse at the thumb nail and gets better once I get to the pinky on both hands. I also have white blotches on my thumb nails towards the top of the nail.
: What is going on??

I'm suspecting some kind of nail infection, but have been unable to find anything directly related to your description. It may be a fungal infection of the nails and will require diagnosis by a dermatologist. He should take a scraping and run a culture to determine exactly what is going on with your nails. This type of infection (fungal)is characterized by onycholysis (nail plate separation) with evident debris under the nail plate. It normally appears white or yellowish in color, and may also change the texture and shape of the nail. The fungus digests the keratin protein of which the nail plate is comprised. As the infection progresses, organic debris accumulates under the nail plate often discoloring it. Other infectious organisms may be involved, and if left untreated, the nail plate may separate from the nail bed and crumble off.
