: I am wondering if I have athlete's foot and/or a toenail fungus. The outsides and bases of my big toes are soar and tender. It feels like my skin is very dry there. I have the same dry skin sensation on my thumbs as well. Also, one of my big toenails is half white/yellow and half normal looking. Any idea what this might be and how to treat it? Thank you for your help!
The yellowish discoloration may signify a fungal infection of the nail plate -- especially if it is beginning to lift from the nail bed and accumulate a crumbly debris underneath. Is the skin around the nails (whether fingers or toes) red or itchy as well as dry and 'scaley'? If so, it could signify a paronychia infection of the proximal and lateral nail folds. either of these conditions will require diagnosis and medication by a dermatologist as the symptoms will only worsen.
