: Please help my son!! I have a 9 year old who suffers from extremely severe scaly scalp. I usually have to keep his hair buzzed because it gets so bad a comb gets stuck in it. We have tried every shampoo under the sun, docs won't prescribe anything. Once a week or so we have to sit down and pick out the hunks of dead scalp that have accumulated otherwise his hair will start to mat up. It is really gross and also excrusiating for him. I am quite sure that by doing this, it just stimulates more oil production which only seems to add to the problem, but I cannot get anything that helps. We have even tried alternating shampoos, home remedies, and I'm almost ready to shave his head!! Please someone HELP!!!
I can't imagine a doctor not treating this! Have you taken him to a dermatologist? If not, do so right away. Regular doctors rarely know what to do for this condition. Keeping his hair buzzed or shaving his head will make it easier to doctor and to comb but it will not cure the problem. Seborrheic Dematitis can and often does spread over the face and neck and can even spread to other areas. Don't waste any more time trying over the counter remedies that won't work for a case this severe. It can also be caused by a systemic disease.
