: MY THREE YEAR OLD DAUGHTERS FINGER NAILS ARE JUST COMING OFF. THEY AREN'T DISCOLORED OR ANYTHING, BUT THEY ARE COMING OFF AND THERE ARE NEW ONES UNDERNEATH. FIVE OF HER NAILS ARE COMING OFF AND TWO MORE LOOK LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO. THEY DON'T LOOK INFECTED OR UNHEALTHY AND THEY NEW ONES LOOK FINE TOO. WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS? SHE HAD A VIRUS A MONTH AGO AND HER FEVER WENT UP TO 104.6. SO, I WAS WONDERING IF MAYBE THIS COULD BE THE CAUSE? THE VIRUS WAS THE HAND FOOT AND MOUTH VIRUS. SHE JUST HAD A HIGH FEVER AND BLISTERS IN HER MOUTH AND TONGUE AND IT ONLY LASTED FOR 3 DAYS. OR COULD SOMETHING ELSE BE CAUSING THIS OTHER THAN A FUNGUS BECAUSE HER NAILS ARE VERY HEALTHY. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN.
Many times, the nail bed becomes involved in the fever and may erupt wuth unseen blisters as well. The result is that the surface layers of the nail plate will lift from the nail bed. Her nails will be fine after a while. Fungus usually appears as a white or yellow discoloration with evident debris under the nail plate. Watch her nails closely to be sure no fungus developes, but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.
