: : MY SON IS 6 YEARS OLD AND HAS ADHD. I LOVE HIM DEARLY, BUT EVERY TIME I TRIM HIS NAILS, HE SAYS THAT THEY HURT. I NEVER DRAW BLOOD AND JUST TRY TO TRIM AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. BELIEVE ME, I DON'T DO THIS ANYMORE THAN I HAVE TO. HE WILL GO INTO A TANTRUM AND START SCRATCHING THE FLOOR FOR ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES. I HAVE RESORTED TO TRIMMING THEM AT NIGHT. THIS WORKS SOMETIMES, BUT IF HE WAKES UP YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE! CAN THERE POSSIBLY BE A MEDICAL REASON FOR THIS HURTING HIM? I'M GRASPING AT STRAWS HERE, SO ANY HELP I CAN GET I WOULD APPRECIATE.

: Great! My son was ADHD as well, and thank goodness they outgrow a lot of it once they have completely gone through puberty. I think it's the testosterone!! :)) Anyway, why don't you try using a 240-grit file to reduce the length and clean up the free edge rather than nipping or cutting? It would be less traumatic for him and for you as well. No, his fingernails cannot 'hurt' when they are cut because they do not contain a blood or nerve supply. The nail plate is comprised of cells that have lost their inner material and become flat and hard. The closer the cells are to the free edge, the older and harder they are. My son would be traumatized by me washing his face -- he hated it when my fingers got anywhere near his eyes, nd he would scream at the top of his lungs. Scared me to death when he would do it because there was no warning! We put him on a diet recommended by the pediatrician - a fairly severe one too. It eliminated all artificial sweeteners, flavorings and colorings as well as processed, prepared meats and certain preservatives. This meant no soda, kool-aid, cookies, candy or anything else 'sweet'. Believe it or not, it worked!! After 2 weeks of 'denial' his behavior and his attention span was closer to normal and he was a LOT nicer to be around. From what I understand, these kids are missing a chromosome in the 64th level of their cromosome chart, and it effects their behavior and attention span. If you can find any information on the "Feingold Diet", that is the one we followed for hyperactive, attention deficit children. My son is not 31 years old, and we laugh at all his childhood 'antics'. You will get there too -- so will your son!

I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR RESPONDING! I AM DEFINITELY GOING TO TRY THE NAIL FILE WITH 240 GRIT. I HAD NEVER TRIED TO FILE DUE TO THE TIME INVOLVED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO SIT STILL!! HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP; BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW EVERY LITTLE THING CAN SOON BECOME A "BIG ORDEAL." THANKS AGAIN.
