: as the new nail grows? : Thanks again!! You will only lose the nail plate if the infection reaches and compromises the matrix. The white half-moon at the base of the nail is the leading edge of the matrix and is called the lunula. Take care not to bump or otherwise injure the nail and keep it short until the lifted plate grows completely out over the free edge.
