I am writing for information for my father. He is 62 and has been retired for 3 years. Ever since he retired he has developed a serious sleeping disorder. The following is a quote from my mother's email to me, which describes the problem better than I could.

"When he is in REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement), which is where dreaming occurs, instead of sleeping, deeply and dreaming, quietly, he seems to be in shallow sleep and dreams with verbal outbursts (sometimes shouting and often profane) and with great physical activity which includes lashing out and even falling out of bed.

He has heard (he can't remember from where, of course) that in older people, this is not uncommon and is caused by lack of a chemical, not unlike meletonin.

Believe me, this is much worse than his snoring and has only been a problem since he retired and seems to be getting worse."

My personal reaction is that this may be some form of response to depression. But as it is continuing to become more of a problem, please tell me anything you can about what my mother has reported. I would like to hear your impressions, as well as any suggestions you might have.

Thank you in advance,

Noel
