I am 32 and was diagnosed with narcolepsy when I was 28. I have has symptoms all my life but when I was about 25 or 26 it got to a point where I could not control it without some kind of medication, the list is too long to go into right now. First, my doctor did all kinds of tests, diabetes, weight loss, thyroid test, etc... You should go through a series of test to rule out any other possibilities. I also did sleep studies. That helps determine alot. They are very informative. Sometimes finding out what you DON'T have is some relief. You may have clinical depression and not know it. There are sooooo many things they can test for. The most important thing is to go through the series of tests. If you own your own business and cannot necessarily afford to pay for alot of tests, you may want to just do some research online. I know that the Narcolepsy Network online has a questionaire to fill out. Sleep Apnea may be another option. Do you snore, wake up alot during the night gasping for air? It helps to have a partner who sleeps with you try to pay attention to that. There are no easy answers. I am still and probably always will be sooo frustrated because I have narcolepsy. I've lost some very good jobs because I can't drive to them, and I can't stay awake all day to work them. I've recently started my own website company to try to make a living. If it doesn't work, I guess I'm SOL. I live in Oklahoma and it's difficult to get approved for disability because what the judges can't see doesn't exist. Anyway, I feel like I'm on my soap box now.
