If your body doesn't do enough work during the day it doesn't need to regenerate itself with sleep. It's tank is still full. So even if you do sleep it's primarily a mental rest. If your body gets a work-out it will "want" a physical restoration period, and will send out chemicals to the rest of the nervous sytem asking for sleep. We are living creatures.
Another factor I find important to understand are circadian rhythms.
