My daughter is now 18 mos old and 1 week ago I stopped smoking for good. She is still breast-feeding and all the information available to me (from LLL etc) tell me that a small amount of nicotine gets into the breast milk, and yet it is still healthier for her than just juice, formula etc. I have never smoked around her, always outside. I have smoked for 16 years, i'm very sad to say.
The patch seems to work for me. But I also read the book by Gary Zukav, called Seat of the Soul. He very nicely explains that you are stronger than your addiction. If you smoke you are letting the weaker part of you rule, but once you fight your cravings, then you are giving yourself more power. His words have actually done more for me than most of the proven bad health effects.
So if you are nursing or pregnant, please cut down for your kid's sake. If I can do it, I really believe that any other mother can.
