: I am scheduled to have the C6-C7 area fused due to a ruptured disk in 10 days. What should I expect? I have read good, bad, and down right scary results of this surgery. The pain needs to go away so I do not plan to back out, but I am more curious about the recovery.

: My surgeon says I will wear the hard collar 24/7 for 4 weeks and then for 4 more weeks except while sleeping. He anticiapates a return to work after the 8 weeks.

: Does all this sound reasonable?

: Thank you

I just recently had a fusion of my herniated disk done. Mine were C5&C6. They went in thru the front of my neck and cleaned out the area that was pinching on my nerves and put a piece of my hip bone in between the two disk. I also had a plate put in to add to support. I had the surgery done on 1/27/00 and left the hospital the next day. My neuro doesn't use neck braces so I didn't have to wear one. The woman in the bed next to me also had the same surgery and her doctor did things so totaly different. She wore a neck brace. All doctors do things differently. I waited 9 months till I opted to do surgery which I think now I should have done it sooner. When you wait the nerve can become more damaged and bone spurs multiply faster. At least in my case they did. My doctor had to use a drill to get rid of bone growth that didn't show up on my M.R.I. that I had done 6 months before surgery. It had smashed both my nerves on both sides by the time I went in. I was in alot of pain before my surgery and am still in some now. We're waiting to see if it is just recovering or it could be the other two under 5,6 which were also bad, but not bad enough at the time to fuse. I get around much better now yes it does take time to heal as I'm still finding out. The pain is nothing like what I had before. Good luck and keep a positive view it helps.
