Sciatic nerve problem

I have been experiencing a shooting pain in my right leg for the past one week. On showing it to my doctor, he has said that there is problem with the sciatic nerve which runs through the leg. He has advised me complete bedrest for a period of 2-3 weeks by which time he says the pain should go away. I do not have any problems with moving my leg, but any movement causes acute pain. Infact, I find it difficult to even go to the restroom or move about in my house. If anyone has had or heard of this kind of problem, I would appreciate some feedback. should I consider neurosurgery as an option ?
