The twitching and weakness could be from spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which in turn compresses the nerves. My husband has this, and we're considering surgery to fix it. But if this is what you have (do some searches on the Internet and read about it), waiting until you have insurance won't make it worse.
