: I have an 18 year old male I am caring for who had his tethered spinal cord operated on twice. Although his doctors tell him the neurological function of his bowels etc. are nearly normal (through extensive tests), he continues to have periodic bowel problems and accidents. Any suggestions to help this problem? We are currently trying the kegal exercises (contracting and releasing the spincter) to increase strength and control.
My daughter has bowel problems due to spinal cord damage. She had a M.A.C.E. procedure done at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis IN by doctor Richard Rink. Many doctors do NOT KNOW about this new procedure. It flushes out the bowels daily thru a catheter inserted in a "hole" conduit made by the appendix, or can be done through the navel. It is NOT a Colostomy. It is exactly for the problems you are discribing. It is worth looking into, but you have to find someone who knows about it. Riley Childrens hospital is the only one in all of Indianapolis, with MANY LARGE HOSPITALS, that is doing it. Riley is associated with IU MED center. Many doctors will tell you the procedure is not for what you are discribing, but if they would check the updated material in the last 2 years, the procedure has been found to be very very effective for incontenence!!! Good Luck, don't give up, there are few doctors doing it, but you could contact Dr. Richard Rink, GU Clinic, Indianapolis, IN for more information!! He is one of the few in the US doing it, but more and more doctors are learning the procedure and finding it very effective for their patients.
