: Hi, I am 33 and extremely active, I have two lower degenerated disks, I have had P.T., chiropractics, and two epidural shots. I want surgery to alleviate the problem and get back to being active, any advice is graetly appreciated.

Hi, I was 31 when I had a work related injury that agrivated a congenital problem, called spondylolisthesis (L4-5), that I had never had a problem with before. I underwent 11 months of P.T. and E.S.I.'s before opting for an anterior/posterior fusion. I was told that the surgery would be a pain reduction procedure, not pain elimination. To be honest, I can barely notice the difference in pain, my recovery has been extremely slow. I too was very active, ie: skiing, softball, raquetball, jet skiing, golf, and tennis... I haven't been able to do any of the above since my surgery a year ago. I have suffered significant weight gain, depression, and havent had a good nights sleep since my injury. Not to mention a serious effect on my sex life. I feel in adiquate and unable to carry on a meaningfull relationship. I thought surgery would have helped restore my life back to a fraction of what it was prior to my surgery... truth is, it has not. I wish I could give you some meaningful advise, but Ive seen what I believe to be some of the best doctors I have ever encountered with no avail. Just hang in there, get as many doctors opionions as YOU feel neccessary (not what your insurance deems neccessary) before you make a decision on what to do, and know that you are not alone.
