: I am a 38 yrold with MVA 2 years ago. MRI showed large hern. disc with nerve impingemt C-6,7. Symptoms:severe pain rt arm/severe weakness. I had ant. cervical fusion 3/98. Pain never went away. Grip strength went from 0 to 71 after surgery. Then last May noticed new numbness again rt hand and weakness. New MRI 7/99 showed new herniated disc C-5,6 central and to the left. Dr.s say symptomss are not matching up to MRI. I got re-evaluated by PT in 8/99 grip strength now decreasing to 61 rt hand. I cannot do hardly anything. No lifting and not much strength in hand anymore. Had myelogram done/showed the same as MRI. Had EMG done. It showed irritation to C-6,7 area in arm. Dr.s want me to have Discogram done. I just need to be normal again. On tons of antiimflamatory and muscle relaxors too. CAN THE C-5,6 disc be causing the problem? What shall I do?

1/99 I had fusion w/allograft at C3-4,C4-5 and C5-6. A titanium plate was installed for support. 5 months later I went back for a foraminectomy at C6-7.It was not totally unexpected as the neurosurgeon explained after the first surgery that additional stress could be expected at the disks above and below due to the reduced flexibility. This may be what has happened to you. My advice is find a good neurosurgeon who will fix it and do it soon. Dr. Bruce McCormack, Ca. Pacific Hospital In San Francisco, Ca is who i went to. Three weeks now since last surgery, arm strength is coming back. Still have pain fron internal stitches but that will go away soon. Good luck!
