: Wow! Thanks John for responding so quickly. Topomax sounds wonderful! How much do you have to take? How soon before you lost weight? Cost? Side effects(Who Cares!- Just kidding. I do want to know of any ill effects. I understand about how medication kind of takes away the compulsion to drink to excess. I was very close to becoming an alcoholic but strangely enough I don't even crave alcohol at all anymore and strange as this may sound, I don't swear(curse)as much as I used to, it just kind of subsided. What is "mixed mania?" and what does Lithium do? I am a married 34 male that has been diagnosed as bipolar -mixed mania- I was told about this condition when I was 17. Tried meds - thought it was a waste of time SO now after many years of drug and alcohol abuse and not being able to stop no matter how hard i tried I found that I stopped when I took my Lithium.Weight Gain, retaining water, getting so fat it hurts my back.SO....the Doctor gave me Topomax along with my Lithium and BAM! weight lost! I had to stop because I have no Insurance but now that i am blimping up again I will find some money some how

Hi, I wanted to get some information on Topomax. It sounds like a terrific medication. I currently take prozac-80mg, buspar-60mg, depokate-1000mg, serquil-600mg, xanax-1mg PRN, ambien-10mg, lipitor, estrotest & loxapine-150mg. I was taking these meds from 12/97 to 10/99. When I was going through a divorce my sister stepped in and took all my meds from me cause she was afraid i was abusing them. I was without meds for 4 months. By this time I was serverally manic, anxiety level was high and my moods we unbearable. I could not longer take the stress of my divorce or my husband leaving me that on 2/12/00 I tried to commit suicide. I took 19 ambien. The man I was seeing, at that time, found me and called 911. I had to be revived. Stay in the hospital was brutal. Tubes down my throat, machines and needles everywhere. Could not talk. All because I couldn't take the lose of my husband and my home. Now I am back on my medications, but I have put on 70 lbs from February to now. I don't eat alot. My meals are usually very small and not things that are bad for you. I don't eat junk food, the only bad food habit I have is I drink alot of Pepsi (4-6 day). I have tried the Pepsi One and other diet sodas, but just cannot get my taste buds to accept them. Since I have gained all this weight I tried going off my meds for the last 3 weeks, but my situation became critical and five days ago I went back on my meds. I am very depressed and go from high to low, lately mostly low. A women in the coffee shop overheard me talking to my sister, on my cell phone, told me about topomax. She says she takes it and she has lost over 15lbs in one month. She said she really didn't have any side effects, except for alittle sleepy, but that went away after a couple of weeks.

I am very interested in Topomax. I'm going to talk to my doctor, Monday 8/28/00 at 8:00am, that is my next appointment time. I would really like to be able to have more information so I can state, with knowledge, what I want and why. The women in the coffee shop did not tell me there were different mg's. So I am asking for your assistance.

Also, last year in March - June I was taking prescription diet medication that didn't help me lose one pound and I did everything that I was suppose to do.

Someone out there please help me with the information and doseage, how often, side effects, combination of current medications and anything else you can think of.

Thank for your help.
Kim
