My dear friend, who is also 80, suffered an embolic stroke last May. He also has no paralysis, but the stroke affected his occipital lobe causing vision problems. He has been told by the doctors that there is nothing that can be done to improve his condition. His vision did improve over a period of six months, but certainly not back to where it was. He was a voracious reader, which makes this especially difficult for him. He has alexia, without agraphia, meaning he can write, but not read. He goes to speech therapy to help him with the reading, but it's a very slow process. His speech is fine. Every case is different.
