: : 72 year old male had stroke on July 4, 1999....took 3 weeks to regain consciousness...minimal memory loss, right brain damage resulting in stiffness to right side extremities and right facial muscle dysfunction. Excessive expectoration becoming embarrassing for him. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and does it go away with time/therapy? What kind of therapy?

: Alison,

: If I am reading your message correctly, we may be talking about the same thing. Please see my message below -- my brother-in-law still has excessive saliva making him want to swallow all of the time (or spit?). I hope someone posts an answer to this question.

My 64 year old husband also has the same problem. His speech therapist is giving him electrical shocks with a special devise that is suppose to help strengthen the facial muscles. After 4 weeks of therapy, it appears to be getting much better. He always needed to wipe his chin, now he sometimes might be able to go for several hours.
