fathers stroke

my father has had three strokes and a heart attack in the last three weeks .The doctor tells us every week that there is no other outcome except death . but i refuse to accept this . He is 74 next month and because of his poor condition , is not a candidate for intensive care.His conscious level is very low , he opens his eyes occaisionally, but doesnt really focus,he has slight movement in his limbs except the right arm(none).He has a blockage in one of the Carotid arteries,which nothing can be done for.The muscle wastage is immense, but the doctor says that physio would be too stressful for him . I know my father is listening when we talk , and has tried to respond . The care he has got is terrible ,but as we are with him till midnight every night , we make sure things get done .
Has anyone got any advice .Do we try and stimulate him further or would this cause yet another stroke ?
