Hello Dora:
My mother (71)also had a massive hemorrhage on April 4 of this year. She is affected on her right side and has minor speech problems (trying to find the correct word) All of her skills such as reading, writing, understanding, math and the most important - playing bingo- are there.
For 3 weeks after the stroke she was in an acute rehab hospital when they told us to start looking for nursing homes because she was not responding to the therapy. She could not stand either. Then one week later, she started moving her leg a little. They kept her for 4 more weeks and now she is walking with a quad cane without supervision and by herself with supervision. She has shoulder to elbow movement and slight movement in her thumb. She is past the 6 month mark now (which "they" say is when most recovery happens...) but people see improvement with her every day. After 6 weeks of in home therapy, she is now going to out patient and the machines are very beneficial to her.
Get your dad in more therapy. ( I don't know anything about aqua-therapy) Slight leg movement is what it took to get them working on her again. Every stroke survivor's story is different. Everybody recovers differently. Believe me, I know that from reading this board since April. It's a long and frustrating road for her and our family but looking back- she has come so far! Keep us posted.
