: I hope that someone out there can help me. My father had a stroke on Sat. and I have been on a rollercoaster of emotions. He is doing pretty well by medical standards, but it is so hard dealing with seeing him so incapacitated/depressed/distressed/etc. I come home from the hospital and just cry because I can tell he is so disgusted and hurt by the whole thing. I try not to show my sadness in front of him or my mom. Has anyone here dealt with this shock of feelings and rollercoaster? I have really great supportive friends when it comes to everyday stuff, but none of them seem to be able to help me with this. Maybe it takes someone whose been there.
: Please help me by sharing your expereinces with stroke in a loved one. It all happened so suddenly. It's like one moment everything is fine and boom the whole world is upside down.

: Thanks.

Hello Louise

When my father suffered a stroke we were in a state of shock. None of us knew what to do.
There were lot of crisis all the time and we dealt with it as and when it happened. It helps
to get to know what is happening, the consequences and to have people who will help in
whichever way they can.

Life changes after a stroke - for the people who are looking after as well. The patient
gets very depressed and slowly after a year comes around to accepting. For caregivers
it is best not to think what the person was doing in the past but attend to the immediate.

Take it one day at a time. It may call for putting aside some of the things that one wanted
tp do as the mind is preoccupied with getting and doing the best.
