: having this graves disease has really put a damper on my life. at times i wished i still had hyperthyroid rather than hypothyroid, atleast i never gained weight.
: unlike now, even just drinking water i feel like i can see lbs. adding on more. i've stopped taking synthroid on my own, which i know is wrong, but... well what i desperately needed to know is....is it okay to take diet pills without consulting your physician? and what are my chances of actually losing weight? i've been seeing so many ads on tv of those fat-burning pills that i'm tempted to place an order. has anyone experienced actually going thru something like this? and how has it helped the weight loss, if any?

Hi, I too was hyper and then brought down to hypo with Graves. I take the natural thyroid - I didn't react to the synthyroid like others do. I gained around 30 pounds which was a lot for me. However after reading the Thyroid Solution and realizes that simple carbs were now my enemy and cutting them out made a huge difference in my weight. I've taken off 13 pounds since January and I'm still loosing. I work out hard too. But every time I go to eat bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or anything with refined sugar I think to myself - for the few seconds it tastes good is another pound I have to fight to get off - so I don't eat it...there are alot of things you can do to get around those carbs - spagetti squash instead of noodles, multi grained bread instead of bread with white flour etc. However, you should definitely go back to your doctor and get back on the meds - you've hurt yourself more by not taking them - maybe the synthetic meds are right for you either - go find out but definitely go back to the doctor. Good luck - it will be fine and you'll be glad you did. It took me a while to find the right doctor but I was glad when that I didn't stop looking.
