: I am going in to have at least half of my thyroid removed on Thursday and I am very nervous. I have never had surgery before and am worried about that. I am also worried about what my life will be like after the surgery. I understand from reading this board that it is sometimes difficult to get your medication regulated after surgery, and I wonder how the disturbance in thyroid hormone balance following surgery will effect me emotionally. I really just don't know what to expect, so any advice y'all can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks. Angie

Hi Angie,

I can't speak from personal experience, sorry. But my mother had a large goiter and 3/4 of her thyroid removed 30 years ago and outside of some minor discomfort afterward for a few days has been going strong ever since. She'll be 82 in three days and can run rings around me, tonight she'll be going out singing with her friends and I'll most likely be asleep by 10pm!
She has a slight scar from it and doesn't like to wear turtle necks or anything that touches her scar (which you can see unless you're looking for it), unlike Barbra Bush who wears her pearls over the scar. That has been the only thing that has ever bothered her in these 30 years. And it may not bother you, just because it does her. Hopefully you will breeze though it the same way, I'll certainly be hoping that you will.
But if you don't have as easy of a time getting the medication regulated as she did, you will at least have support on the though the internet to help you figure out what to look into to find out why, don't you feel sorry for all the people that have to go though something like this without the help & support of the different forums?

Surgery is always scary, but I'm sure you've done your homework and have an excelent surgeon and will come though it with flying colors. Although I've never had a thyroidectomy, I have had over 10 surgeries and each one is still scary.
You might want to go to http://thyroid.about.com , if you haven't already. There are a lot of people over there that have gone through it and will be able to offer more information in addition to the people on this site.

Wishing you all the very best, Tina
