I woke up one morning when I was 19 to find that my jaw had dislocated during the night (I had earlier been diagnosed with TMJ). It took over three months to get my jaw back in place. I spent literally years wearing a mouthpiece because I didn't want to have surgery. My mouth would only open 1/4 inch. I finally had surgery when I was about 32. I had a small cut in front of each year. I had my bad joints removed and replaced with nylon joints. My face was horribly bruised and swollen for a month or so. For me, the surgery was worth it, altho I cannot open my mouth more than 3/4 inch and find chewing painful. If your quality of life is lessened because of this problem have the operation. PS. Make sure that you have a really good surgeon.
