I've been unable to open my left jaw fully for about a month. I've seen a few orthodontists who think my overbite might have caused it, and I will mostly likely have to get braces which hopefully will fix my TMJ as well. So the braces and surgery improved your bite and the appearance of your teeth? but still no cure for TMJ? Are you able to open your jaw fully (ever)? I am really eager to find out if braces will help my situation.

: You were right about needing an orthodontist. Don't give up about not being able to afford it. There are orthodontists out there that are willing to make payment plans, etc. If your situation is as bad as it sounds then there will be a doctor that will work with you, you just have to start looking hard. Make some calls, tell them what is going on, tell them you don't have big bucks to plunk down but you could work out a payment schedule (even if it's only $20 a month).

: I had braces for 6 years and unfortunately still have TMJ. I had a bad overbite and a gap between my teeth that you could fit two quarters through. The gap was fixed with surgery and the overbite with braces.

: I hope you can get some help. I'll tell you again, as a TMJ (really old woman of 38) that don't, don't, don't, get surgery because one doctor says so. Always get a second opinion and if you aren't comfortable with the second opinion, then get a third. Why? Because not all doctors think alike and some always go for the most expensive, invasive procedures first. Doctors aren't gods and you have the right, as a patient, to ask questions and get answers.
