: Rebecca,
: Ibuprofen is noted for causing stomach distress but is a GREAT anti-inflammatory. Maybe you should try it agin but this time make sure you take it with food and/or milk to coat your stomach. The over-the-counter medication Aleve is also another good medication to try. Be aware that oral surgeons are just that - Surgeons- and their job is to cut. You might do better to find a regular dentist who specializes in non-surgical TMJ treatment. There are so many good and successful alternatives to surgery. (Ex: massage therapy, ultrasound therapy, wearing an appliance, etc)

Hi, I have suffered with TMJ for 10 years, and sometimes had so much pain, that I wanted to die. My suggestion is to keep looking for an Oral Surgeon until you find one that you can talk candidly to, be honest with, and that you trust. I just had surgery for Tmj, I had an incision made straight through the jawbone, to create joint space to alleviate the pressure. I have taken Lorcet, and that seems to help alot. I saw my oral surgeon for 2 years, before he agreed to do the surgery on me. The surgery was completely my idea, because i could simply no longer stand the pain anymore. They may be surgeons, but they dont want to cut on anyone unnecessarily, believe me, I am a nurse on a surgical floor, and alot of them wont even do the surgery, unless they have a very good idea that it will be successful. Mine was, thank God, and my oral surgeon.
