I have been a diagnosed TMD'er since 1992 and having been to the Military Dentists 4 times can echo your sentiments. The very first splint I had made was acrylic, form fit for my upper teeth, and designed with a "ramp" towards the front that when I tried to grind my teeth, the back teeth would separate, transferring all the force to the front. As this was uncomfortable, it made me aware of all the times throughout the day I was venting my stress via Jaw muscle. I went back to them today and was fitted for another acrylic splint. The rubber ones gave me a gag reflex and actually invited me to clench the teeth.
