: I seem to have more problems with my TMJ whenever I have excessive dental work done. Just recently I had two dentist appointments within the same week. One appointment was not bad at all. My appointments were for crown prep. I had broken my tooth. The second appointment seems to have been the killer. I remember getting the novacaine shot and how much more it had hurt than the first one. It seemed as it he had hit my nerve. This appointment was now almost two weeks ago and less than a week after my last dental appointment, my jaw locked up. I can only open about 20mm. After having my mouth open as wide as possible at those two different dentist appointments, I realized that was the culprit of my pain and the bringing on of my TMJ syndrome. I have had TMJ syndrome ever since I had braces as a child. I grind my teeth at night and don't even know I am doing it. I have gone through 3 different dental appliances for nighttime. I chew through them. I have even cracked an acrylic appliance. The acrylic appliance seemed to aggrevate my TMJ. Has anyone else experienced the same thing as me when they have extensive dental work done? What would be a good solution to this?

Dear fellow TMJer: I had 4 acrylic splints: they definetly made my problem worse(this has happened with others). Splints help many and hurt some. I recommend the web site tmj.org and their excellent pamphlets. God bless, Al awpcwp@cs.com
