Hi, I have been reading most of the post's here and would like to join in. I had a triple bypass 2 years ago (at age 47) and have been on 20 mg. of Lipitor since then. Everything seemed to be going alright,no side effects, my cholesterol numbers were down from 265 to 210 and I was able to resume my enjoyment for running. Only 6 months after surgery I was able to run a 5K and felt great. Now my legs and back are extremely sore everyday and I can barely walk a mile. I mentioned this to my doctor and he said it's not the Lipitor, "any side effects would have shown up sooner". I don't believe him. Does anyone know if this is true? |

This is quite a situation that you are in. The best way to find out if the lipitor is causing these muscle effects is to quit taking it for a month and see if there is any improvement. It is best, though, to do this with your doctor's involvement since you have a history of coronary artery disease. Sounds to me like you need to confront your doctor and force him/her to work with you. Get second, third and even fourth opinions if you have to. I also get the hint that you need to force some better communication between your primary and your cardio. This is a common side effect of lipitor and you need professionals that will listen to you. Unfortunatly, you are one of the people that really need to be taking a statin drug if at all possible due to your history. There are other drugs, and other medical therapies, so take control and get your doctors working for you, not you working for them. Good luck and please be careful. Hi... My hubby had his ateries cleaned about 7 years ago and then went on Lipitor. He seemed to be doing fine, except for some pains and aches, but blamed it on his other meds., as he has type 2 diabetes and high BP. Only after I went on it last year and got very sick, mostly stomach problems, no appetite and lose of weight, did we research this STATIN stuff. I went off the Lipitor and then went on Baycol. Things seemed fine till the 3rd month and it started just like the Lipitor. Now both hubby and I refuse to take them. Since hubby has been off he is going to the gym almost daily and can wear shoes he hasn't worn in years, as the foot pain was really bad. Yes the dr. was a bit upset, but his cardiologist said there are plenty of other meds, out there to try, as not everyone can take the Statins. My dr. also is putting me on Questran Lite, which I will start soon. Like Dave said, don't just up and quit, especially with your heart history, but DO get your dr., especially the cardiologist to work with you. Keep us posted and the very best of luck. God Bless. |

Thanks for the reply's. I'm going to talk to my doctor about it and let him know my concerns. If he doesn't want to help me get off Lipitor, I'll find one who will. I'm also going to take the CPK test next week along with a cholesterol test to see what's happening with my body. I know I need to take my diet more seriously, and get more involved with my doctors. Although, I am very tempted to just stop taking Lipitor and see what happens. I'll talk to the doctor first. Thanks again! I wish you all the best, DaveMc |

Keep us posted how it goes. Yes, take your diet and your involvement with your drs. very seriously. I couldn't get anywhere with my first dr. so after 5 months I dumped him and found a new one. I wish I had my old dr. of 30 yrs. as he was so easy to talk with, but he retired. Getting accquainted and trusting a new one is a little tuff after being with one so long. Good luck. |

Dave, good luck with this. Please be careful, also. It sounds like your wife is a very caring and concerned person that is really trying to look out for your well-being. She needs to understand that this is a good sign of a potentially serious side effect of lipitor. There is a post down the list from a fews days back from a lady called "Di" where I repeated some of my experiences with 10 mg. of lipitor. That started with nagging soreness in my back, so don't waste time fooling around with this. There are a lot of different drug classes and drug therapies that can get the job done, as well as "natural" supplents. Take care and be well and please do keep us informed on how things work out. Dave, I've read the message and can't imagine having that much of a reaction to a drug that is supposed to help you. I'm not having any problems with my eyes, however, my back is just as you described "nagging" and I can't stand up straight. My legs (especially the calf's & knees) are always sore and weak. Going up a flight of stairs is a painful experience. I'm going to get that CPK test Tues. morning and I'll post the results as soon as I get them. Take Care, [This message has been edited by moderator3 (edited 02-09-2001).] |

Hi I, too, had the same side effects from taking Lipitor. Mine didn't get really bad for over 1-1/2 yrs. and then it was so bad that I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without pulling myself up on the railing. Still not realizing what was causing it, I kept on taking the drug. Then when cleaning the floor, I simply could not get up without crawling over to a piece of furniture and using my arms. Then, what a blessing to discover this message board!!!!!! My eyes were opened then, I tell you, and I did go off Lipitor after talking to my dr. He really didn't think that the drug had anything to do with it. But within 2 weeks, much less leg weakness and getting better each day. The numbness on the bottom of my feet I have abit to this day almost 2 yrs. after quitting. Could be because he put me on Zocor and then on Baycol but both gave the same problems but not as severe. So now it's Pravachol and with no problems--yet. Been on it a mo. so will see. Sorry this is so lengthly, but yes, Lipitor can be wicked for some people and okay for others. Keep after your dr. to do something. None of us should have to suffer like this from something is supposed help us. Good luck. |

Wow this sounds just like me when i was taking lipitor , I would wake up in the morning and I could barley walk to the bathroom my feet and knees hurt so bad . It also gave me peripheral neuropathy (bad numbness in both feet ) too , which has not resolved itself thoug it's not nearly as bad as when I was taking lipitor , they can have these miracle drugs , have these idiots ever thought of maybe dosing this in maybe 2.5 mg istead of trying to feed everyone 10 mg or higher .

Isn't amazing how we all had such similar side effects, but the drs. still say NO WAY, is it the drugs! I'm glad I was so firm and told my new dr. I refuse to take them any longer. I know I have to take something, as I don't want it out of control, but I agree they should be in smaller doses. Seems all the drs. want is to get those numbers down in such a hurry. Like anything in life, start small and work up if necessary. |

Interesting to find that after my blood test this past week, I find the Pravachol working just fine at 20 mg. and still no side effects --yet. I am waiting for that to kick in as it did with Lipitor, Baycol, and Zocor. Been on Pravachol 1 mo. now, so will see. I can't believe that SOMETHING won't show up pretty soon and it will be back to the same old thing of hurting each day. I will keep everyone posted as we go along here. I am very much thinking that if this one doesn't work out, I will go on something natural, if possible, so I am closely monitoring all people's comments on their success with alternative treatments. Good luck to us all!!!!!! |

Well JB, I wish you luck with the Pravachol. We'll keep our fingers crossed that there's no reaction this time. Did the Dr. put you on Provachol immediately after the other drugs? The reason I ask is, I just got my test results in yesterday and he want's to raise my dose of Lipitor to 40 mgs. WOW... I told them (over the phone) I needed to get in there and talk to the Dr. about dropping Lipitor altogether. I'm going to see him next Thurs. about this. I'll ask him about Provachol. It may help me as well. My numbers are: Chol. 178, HDL 28, LDL 103 & Trig. 233 I really don't find those numbers all that high, except my HDL should be higher. Certainly not high enough to double my dosage of Lipitor!! My Dr. is in for an ear full ![]() The CPK test (the one that shows muscle damage) is very confusing to me. The results I received has a handwritten note that says "normal"... !!? The lab statement has a ref. range of between 24-204,and my number is 185. That will need to be explained to me as well. My first question to him...DO I have muscle damage or not? I have been dieting since my first post and have dropped 8 lbs. and some of my soreness had subsided a bit, but came back with a vengeance this morning. I can't imagine doubling my dose of Lipitor ![]() I'll let everyone know how this Dr. visit turns out. Good Luck with your battle and keep us updated on the progress! DaveMc |

Ok Dave, CPK results at that level show that there is some inflammation in your muscle tissue somewhere in your body. Most labs use a pretty wide "normal" range on nearly all of their tests. The key question here is what is your normal baseline range. Unfortunately, you and your doctor don't have that information. The only way to find out would be to stop the lipitor for a month to six weeks and redo the CPK values to know what the baseline reading for your body would be. Quitting the lipitor now for a short period of time is also the best way to find out if it is causing the soreness. When I flushed the lipitor down the toilet, it only took about six days before I started to feel a whole lot better. Good luck since it sounds like you are about ready to give your doc his marching orders. I personally don't care how high or what my cholesterol levels get, I will never take another statin drug again. I looked into red yeast rice formulations this week, and decided not to take them, either. This is just another statin drug and I will not take it. I just got my results back this week and they weren't great, but that is as good as they are going to get for now. Let us know how the "talk" with the doc goes. Dave |

With those numbers I don't understand him wanting to double the dose either? I know when hubby's trigs. went up over 400 the dr. doubled him on the Lipitor to 40 mgs. and he was sick as a dog. He called his cardiologist and he disagreed with the family dr.. He put him back to his regular 20 mgs. because he said Lipitor isn't so great for trigs. anyway. That is when he wanted him to switch to the Niaspan, but of course hubby has now refused to take anything. He is waiting for his next dr. visit, which is in a couple of weeks to see what the numbers are. He is watching his weight, going to the gym every other day and hopeing for some good news this time. He has become so active since being off those Statins, he is totally against them. I still haven't started my Questran Lite yet either, as I am still trying to get this BP down to normal. It was doing fine the last 3 weeks on 2.5 mgs. of Altace, but spiked thursday and friday to about 146 over 89 and I know he wants it below 130. Guess if it keeps spiking I will have to go to the next dose of 5 mgs. Good luck to all of us, and hope we can get in shape both physically and mentally. I have been a wreck for over a year with all these damn drugs. Take care, and God Bless. JJ |

Hi To answer your question, DaveMc, about when I began taking the Pravachol after stopping with the Zocor--it was about 2 weeks. I have had to wait 2 weeks between all of these drugs--don't know why-maybe to clear the old drug out of the system. I cannot imagine taking 40 mg. of Lipitor. I was so sore and hurting with 20, but some people can do so and have no problems. However, with problems already at 20 mg., I don't think 40 mg. will make the aches, etc. get any better. The only thing that I know to bring up the HDL is exercise. 30 min. a day for 4 days a week and it can be as easy as walking. It keeps my HDL's up in the high 50's. It's worth a try and is very easy to do unless, of course, you live as I do this winter in the snowland of the north. Then I go to a Mall and walk there. I guess that I would definitely talk with my dr. about that big increase of Lipitor before I swallowed even one pill. Still no problems with Pravachol-I keep waiting for the bomb to fall and to feel like something forgot to tell me that I died or something because I feel so bad. (ha). Good Luck |

Good luck Dave. I'm at least glad your wife is behind you now and maybe you can get some results without that Lipitor. It just amazes me all these different stories we hear, but the stuff is still adored by most drs. As far as the BP, we haven't used in salt except for what is in any foods for over 15 years? The exercise is another story, and not a good one! I use to be like the energizer bunny till I started with the cholesterol meds. and got so sick. Being so inactive I certainly feel has contributed to my BP problem. Now to get this ole butt in gear and be that bunny again just might help. I wish you all the best and do keep us posted. JJ |

HI Going off the Lipitor will certainly make a difference in how you feel! You will not believe how good you actually will feel. I told my dr. that I felt like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz who had just been oiled.!!!!!He didn't appreciate my humor. Nevertheless, I could walk again without my legs feeling like they were going to collapse at any time. I could bend, I could climb a flight of stairs without pulling myself along with my arms on the railing. Henceforth, my exercize program improved. Unfortunately, all of this with no meds still didn't return my cholesterol to normal, so that's when I went back on the meds trail. First, Zocor, with the same but not as severe problems as Lipitor. But now, Pravachol, which so far is okay with no weakness or aches anywhere. Keep trying--there will be SOMETHING there that will agree with you. Good Luck |

I had a bad experience with the statin drugs. I took pravachol and then lipitor and hurt so bad in my chest and shoulder, that I stopped taking it.Then I went to a research clinic thinking they would have something that would not be bad for me.But, no it was worse. I don't know what the medicine was that I was taking ,except that it was a statin drug. I took it for about a year and by this time I was having terrible pain in my left shoulder and left breast, I thought I must have breast cancer. I was taking so much alieve and other over the counter pain medicine I developed an ulcer and almost died had to have 4 units of blood. Needless to say I stopped all cholesterol medicine. Now I have no pain but my numbers are high so I know I have to do something, but I can't take the statin drugs. ------------------ |

Your so right. It is like a never ending chase for the cure. As U know I stopped the Statins and do feel much better, but God only knows what my numbers will be. As soon as I get this darn BP stuff squared away maybe I will try that Questran Lite that he wants me to try. Like you, I have had it with this trial and error stuff. As soon as the weather here gets nicer, there will be more motivation to go walking at least. I do a little exerciseing in the house, but nothing like I was doing before getting so sick from the Statins. Guess we just have to keep plugging along till we find what works for each of us. Thank goodness we at least have each other to compare notes and get some ideas. I was TOTALLY Statin ignorant before coming here and so was hubby. It was always, the dr. couldn't possibly be wrong! YEAH, RIGHT!! Take care all, and just keep on plugging along! JJ |

Thank goodness for a site like this! DaveMc, you have every right to feel mIserable while on meds --- those who do not have our problems cannot judge how we should feel. My wife, a nurse, passes out meds like candy but has never had a serious illness, so has no idea what med side effects can feel like. I have been on cholest. meds. for ten years ---the Lopid was the worst for me -- I had incredible muscle pains (denied by my doctor as with many of yours), and almost fell off a mountain I was hiking once because I would feel so unbalanced and dizzy, along with nausea. The Lipitor seemed wonderful (although by the time i went on it, I had muscle pains for so long from meds any reduction at all felt great). Problem was, it was cooking my liver. It had a RADICAL effect on my cholesterol -- brought it down from 275 to 130 ON 4MG!!!!!! (THAT'S RIGHT --- IT WAS SO STRONG ON MY BODY THAT I HAD (ON MY OWN) REDUCED MY DOSAGE FROM 10MG TO 4G BY BREAKING PILL IN HALF AND LOSING A BIT IN THE PROCESS- LEARNED THIS TRICK FROM A FRIEND WHO'S DAD IS A CARDIO SURGEON). What does that tell you about what a strong chemical it is? Please don't take any more of this stuff than the minimum you may need, if you have no other options. If you feel muscle pain, then chances are that you are also suffering some liver toxicity --- and if your doctors are like mine, they won't tell you unless you ask. But what they will do is ask over and over agin "do you drink a lot of alchohol?" (I don't drink at all, but they would NEVER consider blaming the toxicity of the meds......). Therefore, FROM ALL OF YOU WHO TAKE PREVACHOL WITH NO SIDE EFFECTS, I WANT TO KNOW HOW YOUR LIVER IS REACTING -- PLEASE ASK YOUR DOCTORS AND/OR CONTACT ME AT ARTISTDON2001@LYCOS.COM. THANKS!!!. It seems all meds have a serious effect on my liver, and (DaveMc and all take note) THE SECOND I STOPPED TAKING LIPITOR, MY LIVER WENT BACK TO NORMAL (as confirmed by two tests, and the muscle pains are less. And why shouldn't it --- all meds are chemicals which (while they can save our lives) are also toxic to our livers. Do we really want to try this stuff for thirty years, only to die sooner from liver disease or cancer?? I WOULD ALSO APPRECIATE HEARING FORM ANY OF YOU ABOUT EFFECTIVE NATURAL TREATMENTS. here is what I'm doing -- I've taken nothing but Fish Oil capsules (loaded with Omega 3s) and garlic for the past month, and my cholesterol is back up to 223 - but it's still 50 points lower than when I had no meds. I get four days of aerobic exercise (stationary bike or walks up hill) four times a week. i suggest everyone consider the diet I have slowly been easing into the last three months (and which has cut 30 pounds from my wife's weight): no spuds, no saturated fat, no dairy products at all (not even skim), no white flour-based foods, AND NO SUGAR IN FOODS (if it hardens arteries and ages your cells, it certainly can't be too good for your cholesterol). Try lots of oatmeal, grains, wheat, beans, vegetables, and fruits (but limit overall carbos), balance this with LEAN meat (fish or chicken best) and/or a soy protein substitute. As per the Suzanne Sommers diet (which is similar but has too much saturated fat), try to separate the proteins from the carbs by at least three hours to help convince the body to focus on burning the fats (it works). I feel 100% better on this diet (when I'm not cheating and eating foods laced with sugar), and I plan to increase the exercise, add red rice yeast to the natural supplements, and increase the fish oil. (what a shame the HMOs won't help pay for the Fish Oil and other naturals) Hope this works for me and others of you who might ry it. If not, maybe Prevachol is next for me. Good luck to all of you and your spouses --- it's great to be helping each other out! |

Hi everyone, I made my trip to the Dr. and he has taken me off the Lipitor to see what will happen (actually, I took myself off the drug and he saw no choice but to agree with me <g> ). It's been 11 days or so and I'm feeling so much better I can't believe it. I'm able to exercise everyday, DaveMc |

Hi I am currently taking Pravachol with no side effects at the present time. This is after having major side effects from Lipitor, Zocor, and Baycol. I have only been taking P. for 2 mo. but already have had a liver test and no damage so far. I am on 20mg. and it has helped all of my numbers. They are now normal. I keep thinking that something will happen here with aches and pains, etc. since I have had so much trouble with statins in the past. I guess I will find out eventually. Good Luck and maybe Pravachol will be the answer for you also. |

DaveMc, how do you propose to raise your HDL level while on a mostly vegetarian diet? |
|
DaveMc Junior Member Posts: 11 |
I'll try to answer your question the best I can. I'm hoping to raise my HDL with exercise and vitamin C. I'm still going to eat fish and some chicken, no red meat though. I realize that my HDL level may drop a bit with a vegetarian diet, but I have had my lowest total cholesterol and best LDL/HDL ratio when on a very low fat diet. The only low fat diet I know,is a vegetarian diet. To be honest with you, I don't know all that much about the subject. I have tried reading as much as I can about lowering cholesterol but I've become overwhelmed with the amount of information and the conflicting findings of all the experts. I've never paid much attention to my cholesterol until after surgery and all my test results have been results influenced by the Lipitor. As far as raising my HDL, I'll continue reading about it and hope I can stumble across something that works. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this. Sorry it's not much of an answer, but it's all I know. DaveMc |

Hi! I'm sorry to read about all the problems people are having with lipitor. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because I have noticed nothing unusual. My doctor started me on 5 mg, increasing to 10mg when it was obvious 5 wasn't doing anything. He has done lipid levels and liver function tests several times. My levels are TC 198, LDL 114, HDL 48 and trigs 167. Considering the fact that I also have hypertension and possible angina I don't think the numbers are good enough, but my doctor seems to think they are fine. I wanted to point out that I reduced my trig from 400 to 167 only after reducing my carbohydrate intake. (in fact, they went up, doubling in a month when I was on lipitor) Blood sugar levels are part of this picture. I did the low fat routine for 2 years, eating lots of pasta in place of meat and saw very little improvement in my lipid numbers, and in the case of trigs, they were worse. Read ATkin's book and the Hellers' book to get an understanding of this approach. In my case, I did not take the radical approach that is part of the low carb diets. Just reducing them seemed to help. In women especially, elevated triglycerides are just as serious, possibly more so, than elevated cholesterol. Chris |

Hi Dave: I agree with you. I'm sure the low saturated fat diet promoted as "heart healthy" does work for some people. But I also believe, from the reading I've done, that it doesn't work for everyone. I worked so hard at it, but I know it didn't work for me. When I started reading about the low carb diets I figured I would try a modified approach and see what happened. CHris |

I have been reading alot of your entries in here about different cholestral lowering drugs that many of you or your loved ones have taken. My heart is beating so fast right now reading so many entries that talk about muscle weakness and soreness. Please take the time to read up on the drug that you are taking. Baycol and Gemfibrozil are 2 that my father was taking and this has him currently in the hospital suffering from Rhabdomyolysis (extreme muscle weakness) and Renal Failure (kidney failure). The kidney failure is caused by the by the Rhabdomyolysis over a period of time. I have read quite a bit in the last week and from what I have gathered it is difficult to diagnos but CPK test is a good way to find out if your muscles in fact are being damaged. My father legs were weak and feeling tired for some time but he passed it off until he could no longer stand. Once the disease took over it took no time to land him in the hospital in ICU. A good resource is http://www.fda.gov check out the drug you are on and you will be amazed at what you read is so similar to the symptoms you have. I also don't understand the stubborness of the doctors in recognizing these side effect as being serious and as in my father case, life threatening. We become vulnerable in the doctors hands, after all they are the ones that are suppose to make us feel better. 6 days ago I basically knew nothing of these drugs but today I can tell you that I would be very afraid to have to take any of them. Regards, Nancy |

Good and bad news to report: I tried fish oil and garlic for two months and my cholesterol went up to 220 (I had a high of 275+). But my liver enzymes went back to normal after six years!!!!! I then tried Red Rice Yeast for a while, but couldn't afford the mix of healthy alternatives I planned and had to go on my doctors new advice of Baycol. Both were BAD decsions -- I didn't get the lipid/liver levels checked on red Rice yeast but it was VERY expensive and (I am apparently the first person to report) CAUSED ME TO GET MUSCLE AND JOINT PAINS LIKE LIPITOR, despite the fact that all natural health retailers say that has never been reported. I am VERY sensitive to all statin drugs -- appparently even the natural ones. The Baycol, however, was MUCH worse, it has caused me the worse muscle and joint pain I've ever had. I had to go back to the tiny doses of Lipitor for now, but the muscle pain is only just beginning to subside after almost two months. I'm sure the liver enzymes are back up, and the Lipitor is cooking my liver. Bottom line: go with the best guaranteed-quality fish oil and garlic you can get, then find a third natural remedy, whatever that may be (suggestions?), BUT WATCH OUT FOR RED RICE YEAST IF YOU'VE BEEN SENSITIVE TO BAYCOL AND LIPITOR. And **IMPORTANT*** --- the doctors don't tell you about what these drugs do to your body in other ways -- they danage all sorts of important processes, including depleting important muscle vitamins. Make sure you buy Co-enzyme Q10 supllements, and investigate others (some come altogether in one "cholesterol drug supplement" bottle. I learned that Lipitor and Baycol can cause gingivitis, heart damage, and damge to other muscles because of this. We should all research this more fully (if I can find the article I read this in , I will post it) Good luck all.... |

The worst news possible to end this thread ----- Baycol has been recalled and the damage it has caused, rhabdomyolysis, is probably also causing serious long term or even possibly fatal damage to users of all other statin drugs. I have found a site dedicated to vitamin supplements and cholesterol ---- it's free, the doctor has nothing to sell, and he says that the dangers of statins have been known since 1996 --- in fact their is direct evidence that the makers of Lipitor KNEW of the the need for supplements such as co-enzyme Q-10 yet refused to tell the public. I urge all those on statin drugs to find such sites, begin a regimen of vitamin therapy, exercise, fish-oil tablets, garlic tablets, and any other natural aids such as guggle, to help them deal with this problem naturally. In the meantime, folks, it is time we find out how this could happen. It is time to FIGHT the drug companies, the pharmacists, and the doctors, who all told us not to worry about the side effects of these drugs. Can you say CLASS ACTION SUIT?????? I plan on setting up a yahoo egroup to get feedback an imput from those of you who have sufferred from thses drugs, and I would like anyone with legal knowledge to assist us in finding an appropriate, expert legal team to help with this suit. The medical establishment has screwed with my body with very crude chemicals, and I want to take these *******s down. For now, contact me at this address: truthsayer2001@lycos.com (I'll be using an alias for this address), and be forwarned that any pharmaceutical toadies or other undercover sleazeballs who try to misrepresent themselves fraudulently to provide disinformation will be taken care of accordingly (and yes, I will be using DNS reverse look-up software to track such individuals). |

Don F Junior Member Posts: 4 |
I've been too busy to research the class-action suit direction so far, other than to ask those who represent Baycol users for their opinions -- and of course, all the evidence is there, via the re-call, to make it easy for the attorneys to make a case on behalf of Baycol users, so they of course don't want to take on a case like Lipitor and do the investigating themselves --- they'll likely wait for the Feds to do it for them. In the meantime, join the Baycol suit if you ever used it -- I did, because the two months I was on it caused me incredible pain. Now here's the bad news --- I quit the Lipitor a month ago and began having severe muscle and nerve pain in my arm. At first I thought it was withdrawal pain and would go away, but no such luck. I then learned that some researchers have been looking into a possible link between Lipitor and Multiple Sclerosis -- seems there's a possibilty that not only viruses can cause that horrible disease. Muscle pain, pins-and-needles pain and feelings of "electric shock", along with hot pain in the muscle tissue could very well be MS. Boy , am I depressed! I'm going to my doctor for the CPK test. Someone please say a prayer for me. Thanks.... |
