Hi- I have been using cyclobenzaprine (generic for Flexeril)on and off. It seems to help me when I am having muscle spasms in my face from TMJ. Doctor says shouldn't be on it for more than 3 weeks at a time. I have also tried Skelexan which didn't seem to help as much as cyclobenzaprine. Hope that helps. |

Hi. Thanks for the info. My main problem with TMJ is that my ear plugs up over little hills. I was told that this was a muscle problem. Do you know if those medications help this? If not, do you know which medications do help this? [This message has been edited by Nicole23 (edited 03-06-2002).] |

Hi Nicole - my ears are plugged up all the time due to what I beleive is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction caused by TMJ problems. The ENT says there is nothing wrong with my inner ear area, and he has ruled out everything related to my ears causing the problem. In other words, he believes that TMJ is causing my ear fullness and stuffiness and popping. Now, I need to relate to my TMJ doctor that the TMJ problem is the cause of my ear symptoms. Are the jaw muscles contracting or constricting around my eustachian tube? What did your doctor tell you? thanks in advance! |

There are many different meds that may work: Norflex, Zanaflex, Flexeril, Ultram, Soma, and Elavil to name a few. You could also try an anti-inflammatory like Celebrex or Vioxx. I was just on Robaxin and it didn't do a thing for me! Each medication works differently for everyone though. There are many other meds that you could try! Talk to your doctor. Good luck! |

Hi mbr22, the Docotrs are trying to figure out if my ear problem is allergy related or TMJ related, because my tympanogram came back normal, yet my ear still plugs up over little hills. I did have Trigimenial Pharyngioplasty prior to the tympanogram, but my symptoms are the same. I had a tympanogram several months ago, and on the left it was at 0.5 and on the rigt (the side of my TMJD) it was at -22. I will be going for an allergy test and I will definitely keep you posted. Also, as far as the eustachian tube is concerned all I know is that the eustachian tube and the TMJ share the same muscles. I think.  RX 4 FUN you have TMJ right? If so, do/did you have ear problems, such as your ear plugs up over hills? If did these medications eliminate the ear problem? Natopheli, Flexeril should be used only for short periods (no more than 3 weeks). Since the type of injury that Flexeril treats should improve in a few weeks, there is no reason to use it for a longer period. Like everything else, it is "probably" addicting. I took Flexeril a couple times, that was enough for me. I was told to take 10mg at bedtime, believe me I didn't have any pain. I couldn't wake up for three days!!! I was so groggy, all I wanted to do was sleep. Way too strong for me but it agrees with some people. |

That's really interesting...I've been taking Flexoril since some time in January (well not really..the cheap one actually!). I'm small so I thought it would affect me like it did you, but I don't feel a thing except that I haven't had ear spasms since I started taking it. I have one left, I think, and I wasn't planning on getting any more. I feel like it's just a band-aid, know what I mean? I want to get to the bottom of why I developed TMJ in the first place and deal with it from there. Anyway, thanks for posting that! I'd wondered if it was addictive but I thought that was just me being paranoid about taking wierd drugs. Nat |

Nat, I know doctors prescribe flexeril for longer periods, in fact "one" gave me several refills. I guess it is "usually" used for muscle sprains and short term pain. I was told, like Lisa, that it should only be used three weeks at a time by a different doctor. Also it can have withdrawl effects such as nausea or headache so if that happens, thank the flexeril. I too, am real small but I can't tolerate much drug wise. The flexeril kicks my butt!!! Take care, Elaine |
