Hi everyone! Well, this is embarassing, but I would like to know if anyone feels like me sometimes. I dont consider myself as an "alcoholic" but there is days where I hurt so bad and no medication - pain killer, narcotics, muscle relaxant, heat, ice, etc. will do me any good. I like wine a lot, and there is some nights where I will drink and get "a buzz" in purpose, just to get drunk enough to relax and let go! I dont want to be addicted to alcohol but so far, this is the only relief I have! I would prefer a more "natural" way of dealing with pain but I have yet to find it. I dont want to become an alcoholic, but it truly helps! WHat should I do?

veronic,
I am so sorry that your pain is so bad. but as a mom I must wwarn you about the mix...I know sometimes I have a drink to relax and it does really help but be careful mixing alcohol and meds isn't safe. I wouuld think a glass is ok, but if you are drinking more, you need to talk to the dr. about upping your base med. then you can back of the wine a bit.
I am not trying to judge you my friend, severe pain is hard to deal with I know and have added a drink or too to the mix to relax, but I am worried that it is too much. everyday.
my sugestion is seeing the dr.

hope the pain eases for you my friend.
keep us updated hun, my prayers are with you.
love bee

hope for pain free moments

Hi Veronik:

Sometimes you just need a few drinks. I agree.

The only thing I NEVER EVER do, is combine pain meds and alcohol. It's the tylenol in the pain med and the alcohol combined that can cause liver damage. (Well, too much alcohol by itself and too much tylenol by itself can cause liver damage too, but you know what I'm saying......)

Just be careful and you should be ok.

Take care,
Sue

Veronik,
Hi there, this is a subject I have been on for awhile now. I talk to my mom about it and my fiancee. I HATE taking medication you see. I drink, especially every night on the weekends. It totally relaxes me as I'm not so tense for some reason my pain goes away. Some nights I feel terrible and don't want to go anywhere but to the couch. Once I get out with my friends I am so happy and relieved and feel so much better.
Some nights after work I even want to drink a little because the pain is so intense and it eases it. This is a major subject for me. My mom keeps telling me that her father was an alchoholic and she is afraid of me becoming one. I drink beer, it is my drink of choice and I occasionally drink wine.
I am 27 and I've been drinking since "those college days" and I know with back pain or not I would be still drink. I can totally relate to that and it totally makes me feel better too. I just don't know what it is.
Besides, if you are in so much pain that something like some wine eases your pain, I'm all for it. When I am in so much pain, that is my first choice rather than a pain killer. I am NOT an alcholic though. I just have this thing about taking meds. It is a no end situation. Beer or meds? Both are not so good.
Just want to say that I understand completely!

Christina

Hi Veronik,

This IS a hard one....

How much is just enough?????
And also, are you taking your medication along with drink?
I would say it obviously worries you or concerns you enough to be posting about it, so what do YOU think.

All I can say is, Been there, done that. Between the back pain and leg pains I had after being electrocuted on the job, I started the drinking bit to relax myself & ease the pain. Being a Firefighter/EMT, I KNOW better than to mix. I did it anyway. I would tell myself "it's only one beer". I really don't know what to say that will help except, get with family and friends. They were the ones that kept me from doing both at the same time. Take care.

I do the same thing and yes it does help. Sometimes that is the only way I can relax too. If you have to drink, drink a wine that you do not like so you will just sip it and not gulp. Cold beer is real good but you will drink alot of it before you know it. Same with wine that you really enjoy. Alcohol enhances the effect of pain killers, etc... so drink a dry wine (that is the kind I do not like) so you will sip it slower but you will get the same effect just less alcohol. Try it it works. BUT do be careful not to mix too much of both. Everyone is right. Take care, CG
