Hello everyone, After reading about all the message boards on the internet -thanks to my cable connection- I decided to join a discussion group. I suffer from adult acne. I am 23 and my acne started when I was 20. I was relatively clear during my teenager years, though I had a few zits here and there. I noticed that my acne started when I moved to U.S. I don't know if the move actually caused the acne, but I have been living here since then. Anyways, I saw a derm two years ago, she said it wasn't very serious but it was persistent and I had some scarring.-I always had a tendency to scar, even from wounds and burns- She prescribed me Accutane, I was shocked cause I had heard all the horror stories about it and the pictures of the people it was prescribed for were nothing like me. After trying some topical medications and antibiotics, I took the Accutane. It cleared up my skin tremedously, of course it had some bad side effects. Here I am, 1.5 years after taking Accutane, breaking out again!! I am very dissappointed to see that Accutane which is considered "the cure" for acne didn't live up to my expectations. Beyond everything, I really want to solve why I get this acne, and why traditional approaches didn't work for me. I am now taking 50 mg. spiro, I just started two days ago. I had to beg the derm for her to prescribe it, she was going to put me through the same cycle of topicals, antibiotics, accutane. I have a gut feeling that my acne is hormonal but I need a doctor who can see my acne beyond the skin deep, I mean find out what's going on inside my body to cause such a problem. There's millions of people that suffer from adult acne and yet, doctors are not even close to understanding it. Maybe that tells us that everybody is unique in their acne, and therefore should be treated on a case by case basis. I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but sometimes I feel like I know more than my doctor..Sorry for the long message, I get carried away when it comes to this..Take care all! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Welcome to the board. Do you suffer from body acne as well? (chest, back, shoulders, upper arms). Yeah, I'm tired of taking the drugs... I'm going for a more natural approach nowadays using Aloe Vera Gel (100%) and Tea Tree Oil (100%). I also drink Aloe Vera Juice which contains most of the vitamins needed in healthy skin; Vitamin E, A, C, Zinc, Copper, B vitamins and lots of detoxifiers. Hopefully, I will see some results soon. (Many people get the results quickly with applying 100% Aloe Vera Gel, so I recommend that) For me though, I'm still waiting. Theres lots of information to be learned on this board.. I suggest looking over the last weeks posts. Good luck! IP: Logged |

Testament, I also use aloe vera gel on my skin, at nights. It seems to help with dry patches and red marks. I don't get acne on my back, mine is usually on my lower cheeks and jaw-line. Where do you get the Aloe Vera Juice? Sounds really good. How does it taste? ------------------ IP: Logged |

My acne also started right after I moved to US. Weird! [This message has been edited by Girlie19 (edited 02-26-2003).] IP: Logged |

Girlie19: What was the main change in your diet after you moved to US? What did you eat more or less of? I noticed that I started eating less olive oil (I am Mediterranean, so I grew up eating tons of olive oil), more cereals and beans, less fruits and fresh salad. I am now trying to cook for myself, like my mom used to, and see how it goes. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Do you take birth control and if so what kind. The location sounds like it could be hormonal but the spiro should help. Actually the 50mg is a lower dose and may take a little longer to work....but the initial breakout won't be as bad either. and In my experience everything new brings the junk to the surface. As far as it being hormonal, sometimes your hormone levels can be just fine and your body is just over sensitive to them. the spiro should help with that, but like everyone has told me , it takes time . I am very impatient, but the support here always helps. Also, some fyi, check out your makeup and cleansers and moisturizers if you use any, but don't change too many things at once because you won't know what's helping or hurting. keep us posted IP: Logged |

I don't think my diet changed that much. Maybe less fruits. ![]() IP: Logged |

Hey Laur: Yes, I do take Orth-Tri. I have been on BCPs since I was 19. I had to take a break because I ran out of them and switched insurances, and guess what? Huge breakouts!! I think my derm thinks that 50 mg. spiro is an initial dosage, so she may increase it. Actually, I will see her in a month, so if there is an improvement by then, she will probably be encouraged to increase it. I will still see an internal medicine/endocrinologist. I am glad I found him, so that he can make whatever tests to see if I have an underlying medical problem. My derm seems to be more like an estethician than a doctor. Botox, Laser..etc seems to interest her more. I will keep people posted on whatever info I get from doctors.------------------ IP: Logged |

Calisia, I think we're in the same boat. I started BCP around the same age, had to go off for the same reason (dad's insurance wouldn't cover me forever--go figure!!) and have since had this crappy cystic acne. It wasn't until recently that I ran across the whole hormonal aspect. So before I started the Accutane that was offered to me by a derm, I went to an endo and he did blood work. Turns out that all of my hormones are "within normal ranges" but he still prescribed the Spiro. As he said, now we're operating under the assumption that my receptors are more sensitive. He started me at 50 mg and said he'd up it in a month when I have follow-up blood work if it appears to be working. It's been exactly a week since I started and as I wrote in another post, my face has cleared substantially. Reason? End of that TOM OR Yasmin OR Spiro, or a combo. Who knows? Hang in there--I'll be thinking of you. IP: Logged |

Calisia: Sorry for the late reply... I purchased my 99.9% Aloe Vera Juice at Superstore in Alberta Canada. It was Fruit of the Earth Brand... couple different sizes. I bought one that was almost 4 litres for $20 CDN. So in USD thats $30. IP: Logged |

My body has always been sensitive to the hormones and spiro worked like a charm for me 10 years ago. When it "stopped" working, I was having a lot of female problems (ie that time of the month EVERY 2 weeks lasting about 8 days). I went through a complete hysterctomy and my skin went from bad to AWFUL. The spiro no longer seemed to help and accutane for 5 months didn't clear me completely. My skin completely changed after that. Well, 5 years later, I am still messing with this and have tried everything under the sun. I currently take the low dose spiro along with the yasmin. I am on my 8th week of that and it has been slow going up until now. You may consider at some point changing bc pills. I know it may mess you up in the beginning but hopefully the spiro you are taking will counteract the really bad breakout if you get one, so its more mild. As I said most women get an initial breakout on the spiro......but it's not as severe on a lower dose. However it also takes longer to bring everything to the surface. Sometimes you clear after a week only to break out again for 3 weeks. I am not trying to scare you, just prepare you. Maybe this will work wonders for you in the short term. But there are some women who take yasmin which has a form of spiro as the progestin , along with a dose of spiro with very good results. Its a little different for me because I don't have to worry about a monthly cycle anymore, but I just stay on the active pills straight through and bypass the white . I will keep updating my progress as this has been a long road for me and hopefully this will be my answer. Just remember, even if your hormone levels aren't high or mixed up, you could still be sensitive to them and unfortunately there is no test to confirm that. So, you may have to go through trial and error. For 5 years Spiro alone kept me CRYSTAL clear and maybe it will work as well for you, but keep in mind that everyone is different, and once my body changed, it was no longer strong enough to keep up with ny acne. Good luck L By the way, I have one of those types of derms.......15 years now . He's happy when I say I'm happy even if I have a face full of acne.....but if I have clear skin and say something about it bothers me, he wants to fix it with the latest thing!! LOL IP: Logged |

Laur, Thank you for all the info you provided. I will see an internal medicine/endocrinologist in two weeks because my derm failed to test me for hormones. I know that I don't necessarily have to have an imbalance, but I really want to know. Plus, I want to be checked for diabetes and thyroid just to eliminate those possibilities. I have ither symptoms like dizziness, being cold all the time, yeast infections and of course acne. I am not sure if these are rekated but I want a thorough check. Is it too much to ask? I mean I don't know if I have a right to ask these tests to a doctor. I will definitely consider Yasmin. The weird thing is my derm was really hesitant about presctibing me any BCP. She says I should be seen by an ob/gyn. I mean, I am 23, healthy, non-smoker, why do I need another ob-gyn visit for stupid pills? They should be over the counter anyways..I will keep everyone posted on what happens with the other doctor. I think it is very important for people to tell their doctor stories, I find them very helpful. Take care and thanks all! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I always wanted to find out what causes acne. I notice that there are over 45 pages of responses to acne problems on this board alone. So the cause and cure of acne is not known at this time. Acne is one of those diseases that affects our self esteem so we are determined to cure ourselves. I think it may be more genetic based because the oil glands narrow in response to hormones. Yeast infection caused me flare up six months ago. After using antibiotic cream plus oral antibiotics for 3 years, I screwd up my immune system so much that yeast infection was just coming back no matter what I tried. If you are interested in getting rid of it, please go to curezone. Just do search in google. This forum talks more about natural staff, strict diet for few month, and body detoxification, so you might find it interesting. As for me, I am still recovering from acne, but it is much better than is was. When I am not pleased with my appearance, I take a look at my pictures with acne onset, and I change my mind quickly. It was a real disaster with a lot of painful cycts and puss in it. As for birth control pills, what I learned from curezone, they do cause yeast infection. What is also interesting, I came from Eastern Europe almost six years ago, and I did notice that my skin got worse, even though I always had acne-prone skin. Yep, I did change my diet: too much junk food, a lot of sweets, ice cream, and not much plain yogurt or kefir - which is like thin yogurt. Now I don't eat junk food and sweets at all. I buy rice ice cream at a health food store. And I do eat a lot of plain yougurt with acidophilus and other good bacteria. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Calisia, welcome on board. I am like you, i suffered acne around 17 and im 22 now. I have had several relapses, and i usually get them around the cheeks, chin, and lower jaw along with red scarring (which takes ages to heal). My skin is clear now and i have been on 2 courses of accutane. I have noticed u r from the Mediterranean, and u have recently moved to the USA. As you may know the mediterranean diet is much healthier than the western diet . Can i ask, do u have regular bowel movements?I have cut down on junk food, including processed foods. i have suffered chronic constipation for 4 yrs, and did not realise that this may be linked to my acne. After going to Canada for 2 weeks, i was only going to the toilet once a week! i then decided to do something about my bowels. I have added more fibre (fruit and veg) in my diet. This also includes wholemeal bread, pasta, rice. I have cut down on red meat and eat more chicken and fish. I avoid hydrogenated oils, dairy food, but yoghurt is good as it contains probiotics. I have switched to goats milk as it is easier to digest. I drink aloe vera juice, and i take burdock root and milk thistle for healthy digestion. i have also increased my omega 3 levels (flaxseed oil, fish oil) - olive oil is good too! I still eat crisps, drink coke etc but at a minimum. I also cook most of my meals, and avoid gluten as much as i can. I must say that i go to the toilet regularly now, but i do have some bad days if i switch to junk food or if i stress out. My skin has cleared, and my complexion is looking good. At the moment i have 2 zits which have healed quickly (thanks to aloe vera juice/gel). if u like to ask me any questions feel free to ask. I also forgot to mention that i take dianette (BCP) which helps to keep it under control. Right now i am drinking pepsi, and i feel good. I have not felt like that in yrs [This message has been edited by black_eyes (edited 02-28-2003).] IP: Logged |

quote: this is a good post, acidophilus is found in bio yoghurt. I eat yoghurt regularly. Detoxification diet is worth a try. I did it and found it help clear the toxins from my system. a yeast infection is called Candida. This could also be a cause of adult acne. There are lots of Anti-candida diets available on the internet. Type 'anti-candida' in any search engine e.g. google IP: Logged |

Hello koshechka and black_eyes, Although many people claim to say that diet does not cause acne, I firmly believe that it can make acne better. I am super-careful about my diet. My current diet is exactly the same as before I moved to U.S and BELIEVE me my skin is much much better. I will learn more about the anti-candida diet although I am not planning to eliminate gluten from my diet because I am a vegetarian and if I cut down on pasta and bread, I basically become an anorexic. The most important thing is balance. I avoid eating cereals and that seemed to help. Also the most important thing is olive oil. I cook everything with olive oil. When I wasa kid, my dad would make me wash my face with olive oil because it is so good for skin. You can try olive oil soaps too. But my advice is to use it in your salad and meals. A light one-not extra virgin- could easily replace canola oil. As for yogurt, I am on the same page as you guys. It is very very helpful. I eat it at least once a day. You can use it as a dressing-dilute with water- add herbs, garlic, or simply with crackers, rice, pasta, anything you like. I feel like going back to the way I used to eat before I moved to U.S -4 years ago- is a solution for my acne, yeast infections and low energy. As for BCP, I know that it may cause candida, but I need them to regulate my periods, plus contraception. I am considering ordering Diane-35 online ina couple of months after I get people's opinions on it. Take care all and be healthy. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Black eyes, I do have regular bowel movements, I did not have bowel problems because I eat a lot of veggies. But I need my caffeine in the morning to help things move a little faster ![]() My sister, though, she has irritable bowel syndrome. She does not have acne but she found that supplementing magnesium at nights really helped her.-just a tip- It totally makes sense that acne can be worse with irregular bowel movements. Changes in your diet will definitely help. By the way, a quick remark, the moderator closes forums that deviate from the subject acne. So, does that mean we can't talk about anything that may be related to acne?? ![]() ------------------ IP: Logged |
