20 year---2 pack a day-er who quit 9 years ago....
I will post only this message & will not fight or argue with anyone regarding what i'm about to say...
The secret to kicking the habit is willpower.... you can buy all the patches, nicotine gum etc... buy all you want - your MIND is the key -if you wanna do it you will do it... I want to write a book - called YOU DON"T NEED THE PATCH---- tis all bogus..
I quit COLD TURKEY 9 years ago---- laid up after knee surgery.. I knew if I could kick the butts just sitting around with nothing to do.. I would have it make---- was not easy ... but most thing worthwhile are not easy... 2 images that helped me quit...
1. I remember a pre operation hospital visit.. a lady with the voice box mechanical device thing--- she must have had throat cancer...
2. Walking with my little girl one day.. I had a butt in my hand.. she grabbed daddy's hand and psssssst OUCH got burned...
those 2 images helped me kick it.. I always thought back to them....
YOU DON"T NEED A PATCH..
YOU DON"T NEED NICOTINE GUM....
You don't need to say you can't do it.. it's too hard.....
JUST DO IT.....
If you really really wanna do it... you will..
If you cannot-- then you are WEAK & have no WILLPOWER....

Don't bother responding cause I will not answer.. Just read these words & determine if you have what it takes...

I've been there & kicked it COLD TURKEY...
There is nothing anyone can say to me that will make me change my mind on quitting...
if you wanna do it, you can COLD T....

it's all in your MIND people...
just do it..... hard or not.....
quit hurting yourself & others

adios

I am replying because I am disgusted with what you said. A smoker has to be willing to make a quit attempt. You need to treat the physical dependence with patch, gum, or pill. the new public health guidelines now says you can use the pill with patch or gum or use patch and gum together. the gum helps with breakthrough cravings. Smoking is not a character issue or a problem with ones character. Nicotine dependence is a disease. It is the nature of the disease. Your brain will always be addicted. Just like diabetes one cannot help it that they have high blood sugars and take insulin here or there. A diabetic has to treat for life and make lifestyle changes. It is a chronic condition. Not a character issue. Nicotine dependence is the same. A chronic condition that warrants chronic support with behavioral support and physical support with meds.

Congrats on your success, Eli but don't be so judgmental towards smokers. There's now research that shows a genetic link and no amount of will power can alter our genes. Who would tell a schizophrenic or a severely depressed person to 'just stop it'? Messed up brain chemistry needs medicine and just as there're drugs for people with various mental conditions research is underway on drugs for smokers.

"In their article, "Evidence Suggesting the Role of Specific Genetic Factors in Cigarette Smoking," psychologist Caryn Lerman, Ph.D., of the Georgetown University Medical Center and her co-authors demonstrated for the first time that a link exists between smoking behavior and the dopamine transporter gene (SLC6A3-9). In their study of 289 smokers and 233 nonsmokers, they found that individuals with an SLC6A3-9 genotype were less likely to be smokers than individuals without that gene. Furthermore, those with that gene started smoking later and were able to quit for longer periods of time than other smokers."
