Anyone ever tried hypnotism? Does it help?

I also want to know if anyone has tried it regarding fears. I am so terrified of storms, thunder and tornadoes, it feels as if I am going to pass out from fear - my heart beats so hard, racing, skipping beats...etc I have also been known to hide when it storms, consumed by fear.

I have xanax, but just got it yesterday and have not taken it yet.

I want to get rid of this fear, and wondered if hypnotism worked?

What worked for me was cognitive behavioral therapy. The Xanax just made the attacks less severe and frequent, but I still had them. Now I avoid them a lot and when I feel one coming I can handle it.

hypnotism helps some but many of us seem too anxious to be hypnotised, try it, as long as its not expensive for you
storm phobias are fairly common, with panic attacks, desensitisation helps.

take the xanax as needed, it acts quickly and is very useful, it relaxes the body and the mind
try a tablet at home if you arent used to it to see if it sedates you

Okay, thank you very much. : )

I forgot that hypnotism is pretty pricy and probably not covered by insurance.

At any rate, I will try reading on cognitive therapy - good idea.

Thanks again.

When you say that "most of us are too anxious to be hypnotized," do you mean that you're too anxious to try it or that you'll literally be able to be hypnotized because of your anxiety?

Whenever you doubt a treatment, do a "quackwatch" search, or a "healthcare reality check" (hcrc encyclopedia) search. I think these sites are sponsored so I will not list them, but they are easy to find.

If your health plan covers psychotherapy, cognitive therapy will be covered.

Incertus,

I believe she meant a combination of the both. For example, in my case, I would do anything to get help. But getting ready for such an appointment would make me really anxious, so when I get there, I wouldn't be able to calm.

And then there is the feel of being anxious and having an anxiety attack during the state of hypnosis, and probably wouldn't be a successful experience.

So, If that is the case for someone, I agree that cognitive behavior therapy is about the best it gets, and it works. THEN possibly after some cognitive behavioral therapy, you would be able to try hypnotism since your actions are better judged.

That's what I need, along with a ton of others suffering anxiety.
Personally, pills are a bunch of S***. It's better to stick with more natural solutions. All pills can do is temporarily calm your symptoms and/or (just) cause a bunch of side-effects, and if you don't experience one or both of the two, then you will surely become dependent on it due to the chemicals they have, AND the realization that they are the only thing that calms you down.
