Hi, Who has a mirena IUD, have you had any problems with it like weight gain? I had this put in 2 weeks ago for very heavy periods, not contraception. I have my period now and so far it seems to be light and I have not experienced the normal migraine and pms I usually do.
The doctor said that it takes 4-6 months to notice if it is working properly by reducing the flow so I don't know if this is coinsidental or not.
My main concern is weight gain though. I had depo several years ago and that made me gain so much weight plus other problems.
Any advice or opinions would be great.
Thanks.

Keep in mind depo's much higher dose than even the birth control pill, and thusly is famous for things like weight gain.

Mirena is something like 1/5th the dose of even the weakest birth control pill -- Alesse.

If you gain weight on this, and it's from the hormones, (which act locally, by the way,) I will eat my hat.

You're welcome.

I guess I'm saying is I don't know personally -- I'm on the birth control pill and haven't gained an ounce, and everyone seems so incredibly freaking concerned about weight-gain that it makes me a little sick.

Generally speaking, the lower the dose, and the less systemic the dose, the less likely you are to gain weight -- in this case, Mirena would be your best choice hormonally, as far as I understand from the literature, and if you were to go non-hormonal then that'd work too.

Hey I have the Mirena IUD I have had it for a year and I have had no weight gain or other side effects. Acutally it reduced my flow to nothing. I cannot feel it and it is the best thing I could imagine. I love it. With the pill i would gain weight and get break outs but I have had none of those with the Mirena. IF you have anyother questions I will try to help.

I just had a Mirena inserted 8 days ago. Weight gain was not listed as a side effect. I have a question for you though. When mine was put in, the doctor cut the threads and then could not feel them. She did an ultra sound to make sure it was in the right place (it was) and then said that if by my next period the threads were still not there, she would have to remove this one and re-insert a new one, leaving the threads longer. Well, I checked later when I got home, felt them and re-checked days later again. They were still there. Today I checked and they're gone again. Should this thing be moving like that? And if I have to have it removed, won't it be painful? Sorry for the long message. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, shooz

Sorry Shooz, i can't answer your question as i have one of my own. I understand that you should have had at least one pregnancy to use this product. Is this due to a size issue or something else? Will a doc tell me i can't have one since i've never had a child?
Thanks.

HI Girls, I don't know the answer to this question either. It has been about a month since mine was put in....2 weeks before my period was due...I have now had my periods for 2 weeks. They are not heavy like before but they are there, I am also having more headache and migraines than usual. Hope these are just coinsidental.

Shooz,

It is acutally pretty normal for the strings to move for the first 6 weeks that it is in. Usually the doctor will want to see you back around the 6 weeks time to make sure that it has settled into the right place. If it is out of wack for some reason then you will have to get a new one. I know that mine is in th right place but there are sometimes that I cannot feel the strings either. I hope that it is in the right place for you
(Sorry it took me so long to respond but i have not checked this in a while)

Hot wheels,

I hope this helps too but did your doctor tell you that you might bleed for 2-6 months straight. That is one of the effects of the Mirena. You should not bleed alot but you probablly will spot for a while. I am not sure about the headaches because my Migraines did not get worse when I got it put in. I hope that your bleeeding is not very heavy. However when I did stop bleeding my periods went away all together.

One of the reasons they tell you that they want you to have a child before is because there is a little more room and also in very rare cases they are women who become infertile or have a very hard time conceiving after they have the Mirena or an IUD put in place.

Anyway I hope that your headaches are getting better. If they dont then I would definately call your doctor and see what he/she says.

JosieOlson, thanks for replying. No one told me the threads would move, only that I should come back after my next period to be checked. I don't have any cramping/pain and have very little spotting. I guess that is a good thing, however, not being able to feel those threads makes me nervous. Like if it is not in the right place, it might not be effective or that it could be harm me in some way. (perforation, maybe?) My doctor has spoken with Mirena and they said this is normal and that there is no reason to replace it.
That I should have a periodic ultrasound to be sure. Well, I chose this so I didn't have to worry for 5 years and so far that is definately NOT the case. Any feedback would be great. Thanks, Shooz

It will "float" around until it settles into place and then you should be able to feel the strings. My doctor cut my strings a little long so I could feel them even if it moved but then when I went for my recheck (6 weeks) he trimmed them up since it was not going to move anymore. I would get the ultrasound done if you are worried because you are right you do not want it to do you any damage. Please let me know how iti s goign for you. I am sure that eveything is ok

Just to let you know I had my Mirena inserted on July 2 and had a fairly heavy period for about 2 weeks after that and a lot of pain. Finally at my doctors request, I went in to see him and he couldn't find the mirena anywhere. He then sent me for a STAT xray and CT to try to find it and lo and behold that thing had tried to migrate into my left fallopian tube and had perforated my uterus. Now about 2 weeks ago, I had to go ahead and have a hysterectomy which has been a lot of trouble too. I just don't know what to trust anymore. Just letting you know what my experience with all of it is. Have a good day!!

I have had the mirena IUD since May. At first my periods was out of control(bleeding for 2 weeks at a time), but now I am having my first normal period and it seems to be really light. I also have some bad cramping occasinally, but I usually take some advil for that and it helps. As far as gaining weight, my weight hasn't changed since I have had it, but I think it just puts off a little bit of hormones.

I have had my Mirena in since April, and I have noticed that I have been passing alot of BROWN blood, even if I am not on my period. I told the doctor about it and she said that it is normal I am just shedding the old blood off of my uterus. If this is normal that is cool, but I am sick of it, it has been lasting like a month. I am not bleeding enough to wear a tampon or a pantylinner, but it is driving me insane. Also, lately I have been really dizzy and qweezy feeling. I am not sure if this is a good thing. If anyone has any ideas please write me back and let me know. Any ideas will help.

Sweetcakes,

You need to make sure you are taking plenty of iron supplements right now. Since you are bleeding a little everyday, you are losing more iron than you would usually. The dizziness could be a sign of anemia. When you take your iron tablets, don't take them with any other vitamins. Some vitamins interfere with the absorbtion of iron. I take all of my vitamin supplements in the morning and take my iron pills at night all by itself. I don't take iron every night, just every other night. You might need to take it every night until you feel better.

I had my Mirena inserted on 5/23/03. For the first month I bled every day. Some days it was only light spotting, but it was still bothersome. I had read that this could happen for 3 to 6 months.
I then found a message by a gynocologist that recommends her patients use a progesterone cream. This cream helps even out the estrogen and progsterone ratio. Since the Mirena excretes estrogen it throws this ratio out of whack. This can result in prolonged bleeding, bloating, breast tenderness, moodiness and other problems. So if any of you ladies experience weight gain, remember to give this a try. Sweetcakes, I would recommend you try it, because within 3 days of my starting it my bleeding stopped.

The cream she recommended is called Emerita Pro-Gest body cream. You rub one fourth a teaspoon on your body for 21 days out of the month. Once I tried this my bleeding and spotting stopped, except during the days when I was taking a break from the Pro-Gest cream. This stuff can be bought at most health food stores, I got mine online at Vitacost. It might help you, it helped me.

I am now very happy with my decision to try the Mirena, as I am not a candidate for the pill, this is really one of the only ways I can have birth control without interrupting sexual spontanaity.

Hope this helps,
Sherrie

Hi, I originally started this post about Mirena iud, and whether anyone had tried it.
It has now been about 3 1/2 months since mine was put in for heavy periods. I still am not convinced it is the best thing for me.
I have spotted nearly all the time since it has been in, (brown blood). I have had 2 normal periods, one at the moment but I also have the breast tenderness, feeling of excess fluid and mood changes.
I am hoping these things will pan them selves out over time as I guess my body has to ajust but my main concern is weight gain. I have put on around 3 to 4 kilos since it has been put in, this is with no change to my normal strict eating pattern.
I don't know if this is fluid or what, needless to say I am gong to weigh tomorrow although I still have my periods.
I hope it is all going to be ok but if the weight still goes on I will have no choice but to get it taken out.
