My first time here was yesterday. I posted a question concerning the use of herbs. Today I went to our local health food store to check out their "raw thyroid" and the sales clerk gave me a paper on how to check your iodine level. I wanted to post this to see if any of you have ever heard of this. Looks interesting. Here is some of what it says ... Here's a quick $1 cure for cold hands and feet ... low energy ... and body weakness If you've ever had any of these symptoms, you may have a low thyroid function (the medical term is hypothyroidism). But taking thyroid supplements won't do a thing if you're deficient in iodine. You see, iodine is necessary for your thyroid to manufacture thyroxin, the thyroid hormone. It’s simple. No iodine, no thyroid activity. I’ve discovered a quick, essentially free test you can do right at home to check your iodine level. ACTION: Just take a Q-tip and paint an area about the size of a silver dollar with two percent tincture of iodine (which you can get at any drugstore). Paint it on your thigh or tummy. If your iodine level is normal, the yellowish stain will disappear after 24 hours. But if the stain disappears in less than 24 hours, it means your body is deficient in iodine and has thirstily sucked it up. If the iodine keeps disappearing in less than 24 hours, keep applying it, every 24 hours at different sites, until the stain lasts 24 hours. You’ve done two important things: 1. Measured your iodine level and 2. Treated your hypothyroidism. Two more points: If you prefer not to paint your body with iodine, you can eat a lot of iodine-packed foods, like beef, liver, turkey, kelp (the highest known concentration of any food), asparagus, whit onions, and broccoli. Then take the iodine test every three to six months. And if you’re currently taking a thyroid supplement, you must immediately cut back on the dosage if you’re taking iodine. In fact, you may be able to discontinue it all together. For one lady (leaving out name here) this simple, inexpensive cure has done wonders. She had all the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism; cold limbs, lack of energy and body weakness. But for her, iodine was a “miracle” – restoring her health and completely eliminating her symptoms. From free special report, “New Miracle Cures”. [This message has been edited by seeking grace (edited 04-10-2003).] IP: Logged |

Hopefully, that will work for you. My experience was that taking Kelp for the Iodine content made me crash spiral downhill quickly. In my case, I wasn't Iodine deficient. I agree that's a great test, but for some, it may cause a problem. IP: Logged |

Meep ... I hate to hear this ![]() Did you use this iodine method of trying to see if you were deficient. Looking for input here ... for this is all new to me. I did the iodine painting at 5:00 yest afternoon. By 10:00 last night it was all gone. Did it again last night. It was gone this morning. Just applied some more. I was hoping this would help solve my problem without having to spend lots of $ on doctors visit. $ is tight right now and insurance doesn't help much! Thanks for your response beforehand ~ IP: Logged |

I took Kelp for awhile after I got a high TSH (9.3) then a "normal" retest of 5.3 when my doctor decided to wait and see before sending me to an endo. I took it on the advice of a well-meaning friend who looked up Thyroid in her herbal book which recommended Kelp for thyroid health. After 6 weeks of taking it then being retested, my TSH came in at 9.3, so I threw the Kelp out! It was clearly making the problem worse. I suspect it's OK for perhaps maintaining an already healthy thyroid, but bad news for an unhealthy one. IP: Logged |

Thanks for input. Not so much interested with kelp as actually using iodine on body. So easy! I am asking if this test is accurate and this "cure" is sure ... IP: Logged |

I didnt' use the Iodine painting test, liek you described, but based on my experience with taking Iodine-rich kelp, I deduced that I was not Iodine deficient. If your body is taking up the iodine quickly, then you may well benefit from the Iodine and it is DEFINITELY worth trying. I just wanted to make it clear that Iodine deficiency is not the only cause of hypo and that Iodine can make it worse for some people. Selenium deficiency has also been reported to cause people to be hypo. If you are selenium deficient , but not Iodine deficient, I have read that supplementing Iodine can make things worse, I bet that is what happened in my case. Here's an article about that: http://euthyroid.org/G_Beckett_Dec2000.pdf IP: Logged |

Just going one step further on this Iodine theory. Exactly when did we as North Americans stop using iodine on scrapes and cuts? I remember as a child getting the iodine put on, and, did this help in keeping certain individuals hypo free? Has there been an increase in Hypothyroidism since the wide spread stoppage of using iodine on cuts? Just thinking here. IP: Logged |

I believe common use of iodine on wounds fell out of favor due to many cases of excess iodine, perhaps causing hyperT, and also accidental poisoning of children from ingestion. But I've read that the increase of hypoT may be due to doctors recommending lower salt consumption for their patients. Manufacturers of processed foods rarely use iodized salt in their production. (The exception is commercial bread bakeries, where the addition of iodide is mandated by law.) So even though western countries overconsume processed foods, it doesn't necessarily follow they get enough iodine in them. In my own case, I switched from iodized salt to kosher salt at least 15 years ago, and my diet is low in fish, dairy, and commercial bread. Fruits and vegetables are usually not a significant source of iodine, because US soils have been depleted of the element due to the use of chemical fertilizers and soil-leaching. Another contributing factor in the increase of hypoT might be the more common practice of ingesting lightly steamed or raw cabbage-family vegetables. Just within the last generation, these were usually cooked for a much longer period, resulting in the reduction of their goitroenic effect. IP: Logged |

FYI if you are curious. I have applied iodine 4 times in the past 36 hours. It is all gone! I am wondering, still, how precise this little test is. If so ... man am I deficient of this little mineral! IP: Logged |

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have underlying thyroid difficulties, iodine can be like poison for you! I know of what I speak! I have had Hashi's for 6 years, thought taking iodine would "help my thyroid health," and have developed a type of paradoxical hyperthyroidism along with my Hashi's! If you ever want to feel totally miserable and out of control, this will do it! I can't stress this enough! For god's sake, be careful with your health! IP: Logged |

FINALLY ... an anwer! wobbly ... I absolutely appreciate your warning. I presented all this and have asked if this is accurate or effective. I have searched and searched for hours concerning thyroid health. I have posted questions. I am so glad you have presented you "mind" to me ... but please, will you be specific. Can you tell me your experience. I am needing help and trying to treat myself at home. I have just about decided that the best way to treat myself is to learn how to eat correctly ... but can't even find how to do that really. Please, tell me your story. Thanks ~ Joy [This message has been edited by seeking grace (edited 04-13-2003).] IP: Logged |
