Hi All! I'm new to this board. Glad I found it! I saw a new physician yesterday, & he told me I've got the worst case of TMJ he's ever seen. I know the cause was a violent boyfriend. I went to a TMJ guy when it happened. He just gave me a bite plate & sent me on my way. I wasn't really worried about it. It stopped hurting & I just forgot about it. I guess I wasn't fully cured when it happened 8 years ago, & it's just gotten worse ever since. How come my dentist never said anything about it? The dr. I saw yesterday said that my molars are almost gone! Does anyone know of anything I can do to help correct it? I don't have a lot of $, as I'm on Disability & do not work. The dr. wasn't really informative about it & I figure I'll get an answer more quickly here than by calling his office. Besides, I hate the "musac" version of "Muskrat Love!" heehee Any insight you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Liesl------------------ IP: Logged |

I have TMJ, and was told that TMJ is not curable. You can do things to help relieve it, such as bio-feedback, sleeping with a nightguard, take out caffeen from your diet. I hate having it! Stress doesn't help either! Hope that helps. IP: Logged |

Hi Liesl, TMJ can be effectively treated so that the sufferer has a high degree of functioning. I am one of the lucky ones! I had a REALLY bad case that started almost 6 yrs. ago. After successful treatment (with splints and orthodontic case finishing)along with other complimentary therapies (chiropractic, physiotherapy, masssage therapy), I am now what I call "95% normal". It took me a little over 4 yrs. to feel "myself" again. Marlene I wonder ... if Humpty Dumpty was pushed, did it cause him to end up with TMJ? i've mentioned this before here, but it really works to releave the pain. there is an exercise you can do, you put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, right behind your front teeth, let your lower jaw drop comfortably & it really relaxes the jaw, takes pressure off the joint & helps a lot. when i'm nervous i must pop my jaw and i just had it all sore again, the ear, neck the whole works. i did the exercise thru the day for two days & it's much better again. it's not a cure, but sure releaves the pain & pressure, i've even gotten rid of the tmj headache by doing this. hope this helps. whether you can be cured or not all depends on the condition of your joints most people who get treated early can make a full recovery. there are many treatments options out there you just have to find out what works best for you. later IP: Logged |
