I have had clogged and popping ears now for almost 6 months! Every dovtor I have seen believes it is allergy related. However they said it may also be TMJ and told me to notice if I am grinding my teeth at night. I am taking Claritin and Rhinocort wothout much sucess. I am also now getting allergy injections for mild mold allergy. How can I tell for sure what is really wrong with me? The clogged ears are driving me nuts. Sometimes when I blow my nose to try to pop ears they clog really bad then pop after a few minutes. I do seem to have mucous in throat especially in the morning, but not a lot of other allergy symtons. Ear canals itch too. Any sugesstions? Thanks ![]() IP: Logged |

I also have popping and a kind of deep itch that can't be relieved. I was told by an ent it was due to my tmj problems. My surgeon told me it may go away when all of my swelling due to the surgeries I have had. I was told if it doesn't stop in time, I will need to get tubes. IP: Logged |

Hey- My ears were in the same state as yours ... only my symptoms went beyond clogged ears ... they pop every time I swallow, and I have a high-pitched right in both ears ... it all started around April of 2002, which initally led doctors to believe it was allergy related (grass alergies are worse in CA around that time). I did the Rhinocort and Claritin route as well, without much help... then a doctor at the Stanford Ear Institute figured it was probably caused from TMD. Finally decided to get tubes put it back in November of 2002. Good decision .. took the clogging away, though they still pop when I swallow and the tinnitus is still there. The tubes were short-term tubes ... only supposed to stay in 2-3 months to make sure they helped the problem. To be honest, I have no idea if the tubes are still in. My follow-up dr's appt isn't until next month. I can say that the pressure is still gone though. I only wish the tinnitus would go away too ! But it is getting better. I wear a splint religiously at night which has seemed to help as well. Good luck with whatever you decide to do ... tubes worked very well for me ... I was able to fly home for the holidays after not being able to change altitudes for almost a year without my head feeling like it was going to explode. Take Care. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the replys. I just don't understand all this at all. Some days my ears feel pretty good, and then like right before a storm they get bad. How can that be TMJ? Did the tubes hurt going in? How do they do the operation? I am petrafied of being knocked out. I am considering also trying accupunture, who knows if it will help, but anything is worth a try. I am just so frustrated at this problem, and the fact that doctors don't seem to do much to help. IP: Logged |

Hi everyone, I have almost every symptom of tmj you can have. The headaches, pain behind my eyes, jaw pain, facial pain, etc. I never really had any problems with my ears untill 2 weeks ago. Thanks so much, [This message has been edited by thisstarr (edited 01-10-2003).] IP: Logged |
