Hi All,
I hope everyone is doing ok. I found out the other day at the TMJ doctor's that I am continung to grind my teeth a lot. I think if I could stop grinding, my headaches would go away. Any ideas? Would getting braces help that since I have an overbite?

Hi Lynn,

I have no clue, but I have found my splint helps me not to grind. Do you have a splint? Also, I try to relax as much as possible before going to sleep. I lay the right side of my jaw on a heating pad in bed for about 20 mins which seems to help. I try to clear my mind (doesn't work all the time) before falling asleep to see if that helps. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. If you find out an answer please let me know........Jill

An NTI splint will suppress clenching and grinding. You can find out about it by looking up Dr. Jim Boyd on an engine search. I think most dentists are aware of the NTI by now.

I wouldn't go the braces route until you've eliminated the grinding.
I agree with GenDen that you should be looking into an NTI splint. At the very least, look into any type of splint that prevents your teeth from "gearing" together when you sleep.

Hey Lynn,

I've been a teeth grinder for over 30 years...started when I was four. There is no guarantee to make it stop...but releasing some of your stress before going to bed seems to help. A bite plate is essential as well. This will keep you from getting a good "grind" going as well as protect your teeth. It's a bad habit, one that you have little control over.

I've been on flexeril to stop mine recently, but when I'm coming out of it in the AM, my husband has to wake me to keep me from grinding. That's less that one week after arthroscopy too! Stress needs to be reduced as much as you can, and if you physically wear yourself out before you hit the pillow, you have less of a chance to grind as well...try changing the position you sleep in too...you can grind easier in certain positions than others....

Good luck!
Jennifer
