I took a look at both these plans, and started Atkins with my husband about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I have been following induction, keep my carbs at about 15 per day, only eating foods allowed on the list and have only lost 3 measily pounds! I am considering switching to South Beach, but at this point I am so unsure. On Atkins I am hungry all the time. It's miserable and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. So far today I've had an omelet wtih cheese and pepperoni, two mozarella sticks, sald with chicken and egg and some sf jello and I'm still hungry??????

i am going to personally be trying the south beach diet due to the introduction of good carbs later on. I myself barely eat any meat so the idea of a high protein diet made me a bit apprehensive as most meats (i avoid cow/pig products w/ a vengeance!) just give me tummy-aches =\. However, the point of high protein diets is that it helps stabalize your sugar levels, thus supposedly decreasing your body's cravings. If you followed Atkin's plan to the red-letter, you should start noticing those hunger cravings decreasing. Maybe you should have some blood work done to see if there are any thyroid, insulin problems.

I've heard Atkins and South Beach are extremely similar, but South Beach is a bit more lenient when it comes to carbs later on. The first two week induction i've heard are almost hand in hand.

The scale is also misleading. I suggest you try measuring yourself or following pantsize instead.

hope that helps somewhat? Dunno, as I am a diet newbie , and all I know is stuff I've heard from other people! Well all in all...good luck!

Thanks Silly. I think I should see a Dr also because nothing is working. I am following it to the letter with very minimal results. I'm not weighing myself until Friday and I'll know for sure. I've seen a small difference in my jeans, but I expected more I guess. Good luck with South Beach. If this doesn't work out I think I'll hit the waves myself soon!

I am starting the south beach diet tomorrow - had to wait until payday so I could go grocery shopping for the foods I need. I am pretty excited about this diet - I lost 40 pounds last year by watching what I ate and working out 4-5 days a week at the gym. Then it just came to a stand-still. I quit going to the gym and ate a bit more but luckily didn't gain anything back - sure noticed the change in muscle tone though!~ Then recently I read about the south beach diet and thought it sounds perfect for me - will help with my diabetes too! I need to lose about 110 pounds, I want to do it slow so hope this works!!! Any advice is sooooo welcome!

Jennyo,

I am also on atkins (or I was until i fell off the wagon )

Are you taking a lot of supplements like vitamins and minerals? When I take a good vitamin supplement and things like l-glutamine, l-carnatine, some omega 3,6, and 9 and other things, my appetite decreases dramatically. When your body is missing nutrients, your cravings sometimes get bad. Atkins is low on quite a few nutrients at first. Dr. Atkins says you should be on supplements as well.

If you are taking something, Maybe the dr. can help you. I'm at a loss otherwise. Good luck!!!

I'm going to try the South Beach diet on Monday. I hate starting diets in the middle of the weeek. I went online and took a look at it....I think maybe this one is the one for me.

JNL - I have been on the South Beach Diet for 1 week now. I must honestly say this is by far the easiest diet I have ever been on. I do not even feel like I am on a diet. I just feel like I am eating healthy! Good Luck

I am the south Beach whiner that lost no weight at all in the first 10 days. I was out of town over the weekend and fell, not just off the wagon, but was literally trampled by the wagon! I am back on track and adding exercise, so we'll see.

My Mother has been doing the South Beach (should I say way of eating or diet, don't want anyone to jump all over me...lol). Anyway, she's been doing it for over a month now and has gone down 2 pants sizes.

Hello all! I have finally reached the 7 day mark and have had my first weigh in after starting the South Beach Diet. 3 lbs in 7 days. That is without exercise - I wanted to test the diet and do the first two weeks without going to the gym and see how much I lose. I feel like I have lost more than 3lbs - but I am satisfied with that. After two weeks I'll start going back to the gym and that should step it up a bit. But if I continue with 3lbs a week - WONDERFUL!!! I really like this eating plan and will most likely stay on phase one longer than the two weeks. I don't even crave the carbs or sugar - or the fruit wich suprises me! I am looking forward to hearing from all of you on your progress.

I have been on Atkins for 4 weeks and lost 17 pounds. I eat mostly eggs during the day, sometimes with a little ham and cheese. For dinner, it's usually salad with no carb dressing and some sort of meat. I eat until I'm pleasantly full and have no cravings or hunger pangs between meals. I don't think you are supposed to have jello or any sweet snacks, it might spike your blood sugar.

Good luck...

I didn't read all the replies so if i repeat sorry.

Is it possible that the pepperoni isn't nitrate and sugar free?? Also a lot of people are halted by aspertame. That's another possibility. Also the point of this diet is to eat till satisfied. But if you don't eat meat a low carb high protein diet is hard to follow and not very satisfying. Make sure you eat till you are full but stay under 20 grams. Another problem might be that your metabolic resistance is really high in which case there is a section in the book that can help you kick start it. But seeing a dr is a good idea as well.
Good luck and let us know what happens

Here's something that worked for me:

I did a modified version of SB or Atkins. I REDUCED my carbs and cut out all REFINED carbs from my diet. I eat fruits (2-3 servings per day) and whole grain, sugar free bread.

I found that this modification to SB/Atkins made them more doable. I lost 30 pounds this way.

I am now maintaining and have been able to cheat (eat some refined carbs) and not gain.

I hope this helps. I certainly understand the frustration of dieting. The plan I did was less strict, which worked for me.

Have a great day!

Can you tell us what brand the bread is? Is it Atkins?

Hi Magicmom!

I'm so glad you posted - 17 pounds in 4 weeks makes me feel better about my 3lbs in 7 days, I have read that those on the SB diet lose more in the second week so I should be right on track. I love this way of eating, I feel good. I have concocted some really good recipes already too. If you like seafood, I saute onions and garlic in olive oil and balsamic vinegar, then add whatever seafood I want - calamri, sea scallops, shrimp, crab ect. When it is all cooked I pour it over several different kinds of lettuce and spinach and eat - really good!!! I also like the sugar free jello, it fills me up and is a nice treat!

Hope to hear back from you on your progress!
