Hi All,
I had a hysterectomy last Feb. for endometriosis, now my gyn has discovered that I still have residual endo
(some they missed). She has prescribed for me 1 shot of depo-lupron a month for 6 months. I was wondering if anyone here has been on depo-lupron after a hyst?
She said if that does'nt work surgery will be the only option. I have only had 1 shot so far and am gaining weight and feeling bloated! I have suffered with endo for many years(since I was in high school). I am now 44. I had an e-mail from a Dr. Ken Sinervo from The Endometriosis Center and was wondering if anyone here knows him or of him? Also wondering if anyone here knows where the center is?
Thanks for any replies or suggestions!
Sincerely, B-Jean

I was on Lupron for 3 months for endo, but I've not had a hyterectomy. I didn't really have any side effects but some women have had dibilitating side effects. Do a search using the words "Ruth" and "endometriosis" and you will find a site all about the side effects.

I was on lupron for 2 months for hemmoraging after a miscarriage I had a shot for 2 months before my endometrial ablasion. I have since had a total abdominal hysterectomy (may 2002). From what my OBGYN told me it tricks your body into thinking its going through menopause its supposed to stop the bleeding it worked for me. I wasnt on it long enough to notice weight gain and I was too anemic to care about anything but stopping the bleeding. I wish you the best with it.

Hi, BJean.
I was on Lupron for 3 months because I had severe bleeding from fibroids. It took a long time to kick in (2 full months for me) and it brought with it hot flashes and mood swings. It eventually did shrink the fibroids and control the bleeding a little, but I couldn't stand the Lupron side-effects, went off it, the fibroids grew back, I had to get blood transfusions for the anemia, and eventually just had an abdominal hysterectomy. I should have just had the hysterectomy in the first place. For me, Lupron just dragged out the misery of my condition. But a lot of ob/gyns recommend it before going thru with surgery. Good luck in making the right decision - there are some excellent experiences being shared on this board.

I took lupron for 6 months to see if it would help my endo and put it into remission. I had no side effects from the lupron except I gained 50 pounds. The lupron did nothing for my endo and I still needed a hysterectomy when it was all said and done. I was very disapointed in the lupron.

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies! Now I don't know what to do!!! I had a bone density test done and shows I have osteopenia(was close to osteoporosis numbers). I read that depo lupron can cause bone loss I have not been on HRT's because I have clotting problems. I also was diagnosed with "unstable angina". Next week I go for eye tests becuz my eye doc said my eyes look suspicious for glaucoma!
Some people say that God does not put more on your shoulders than you can handle-just can't figure out why he is being so mean to me!!! Sorry just venting.

Hi B-Jean,

I saw this post...I was also put on Lupron for 6 months, prior to my hyst for endometriosis. Obviously, it did not work. I had to go through hot flashes, some weight gain, but most importantly; terrible mood swings.

Knowing what I know now (thanks to your's & others' replies to my posts),it seems that we don't have a lot of options, unfortunately.

I have decided not to do HRT, at least until a year has passed. I made this decision based this on the information I gathered here. I am going to try to look into other medications that prevent bone loss. I know I heard something recently from the media, but don't remember what it was specifically.

Anyway, it seems the hard choices we are forced to make have to be carefully weighed-out. I would say if the Lupron is causing a great deal of problems for you, then it probably isn't worth it. If it is not, then I wouldn't think 6 months of therapy would cause a significant amount of bone loss.

I can empathize with your problems...I hope you will find the right answers and wish you all the best. Hang in there!!

I am confused about something. Lupron works for endo because it puts you into menopause, which disrupts the hormones that feed the endo. If you had a hyterectomy then aren't you already in menopause? If so then using Lupron wouldn't make any sense.

I am 24 years old. 2 weeks ago I had a laporscopy and a D&C and had some endo and scar tissue lasared off. Now they want to put me on a 6 month regiment of DepoLupron shots. I have heard some staggaring information as far as the side effects of this drug. Some being, becoming suicidal, extreme mood swings, having to be put on nerve pills, being tired to the point of almost fainting, things like that. I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 9 month old, not to mention I work full time. I can't really afford for these things to happen to me. And after reading the postings on this site it seems as though most if not all of you who went on the depolupron ended up having to still have hyst. Are there any less detrimental alternatives to this shot? My followup to my laparscopy and first shot are scheduled for tomorrow. Any advice would be appreciated.

My daughter is 22 and recently had laparoscopy for severe endo and cyst removal. She has had her first shot of Depo Provera and is miserable with the side effects. She has put on about 10 pounds around her abd and hips and is still having some spotting. Now she is wondering if she should even have the second shot. The doc told her that it will deter the endo from returning. Are there any other alternatives?

i'm about to have my second shot of lupron next week and have noticed a few side effects. other than nite sweats, which in this cold winter i don't mind that much. is the weight gain. has anyone else been able to fight off this weight gain. with summer coming i've been trying everything i can think of and it hasn't helped. but as i would suggest to the woman wondering if you daughter should have another shot, i would tell her and remind myself to bite the bullet and go through with it. far too many doctors claim it helps.

I had my doctors apointment yesterday and my doctor and I decided that with my life---working 40-50 hours a week with 2 small children---it wouldn't be a good idea to put me on the DepoLupron. They are leaving me on birth control for 3 months to see if it helps with the cramping and to slow my endo down. As of today, I can't find anything less than vicodine that can make my pain go away. She said that my endo is growing quickly, in the 8 1/2 months since I have had my last child I went from none to a level 2 almost level 3 of the 4 total levels. She is concerned about doing a hyst strickly because of my age/hormones. Fertility isn't a factor we have to look at because I am done having children, but I am not sure I will be able to force myself to suffer with these cramps through the next 3 months while we decide what to do next.
Any ideas?

Hi again all,

If I may ask relynne-what age are you? Alot of doc's won't consider a hyst until a woman is at least 35-if your lucky! I was 43 when I had mine! None of the shots they gave me worked for my endo pain. I was put on the "pill" everyday when I was 20 to stop my period-I think they did'nt know exactly what endo was back then. I was not diagnosed with it until I was 26-after many tests. They have come a long way-but they need more specialized surgeons for it. The surgeon I had did not get all my endo-so I now am in contact with a specialist in Georgia, The Center for Endometriosis Care. My doc has sent my records to him and I will likely be going there the end of June or beginning of July. It has made me put my life on hold enough!
I missed alot of school days and was not able to hold down a job becuz of all the days I missed.
Good Luck to you and sorry this is so long!
Sincerely, B-Jean

Hi Ladies,

Have any of you heard of Natural Progesterone in treating endo? Natural Progesterone is a hormonal cream that contains the identical hormone that our ovaries make when they are healthy and doing what they are supposed to do. When someone has endometriosis the endometrial tissue that is around in the abdomen where it is not supposed to be is pumping out estrogen during the period. Estrogen is largely responsible for the over production of endometrial tissue. Natural Progesterone is a natural antidote to too much estrogen. Like many natural products it is not a quick fix. It can take many months of use to re-balance the system. Endometriosis is a condition of major lack of balance. Too much estrogen, not enough progesterone. Naturally there should be a ratio of 1 estrogen to about 300 progesterone. If the ovaries are not working right and no eggs are being produced, there is no progesterone being produced. Without progesterone the problems can be profound, like endometriosis. Natural Progesterone is available over the counter in good health food store. Just make sure that the brand you get has at least 980 mg of natural progesterone per 2 ounce tube. That gives the proper dose per use. When using it to cure endo, use 1 tube a month for several months. This is a lot more than normal but endo is not normal. There is no risk involved in using it this way. It is totally safe an risk free. Also get a hold of a copy of one of Dr. John Lee's books and read about what he says about Natural Progesterone. the books are "What your doctor may not tell you about Menopause" and anouther "What your doctor may not tell you about Premenopause" These are awesome books by a now retired OB/GYN who used natural progesterone in his practice for years with great results for many female complaints including endo. A nice by product is that natural progesterone helps to build bone so it protects and heals osteoporosis. Good Luck to you all.

I was on lupron for six months to treat my endo. It was pure hell. I gained 28 pounds even though I watched my diet and exercised daily. The mood swings and depression were far worse than anything I have ever experienced in my life. I have been off lupron for seven months now. I have lost most of the weight but I STILL haven't gotten my period. The doctor says not to worry but I find that strange. Anyone else experience this?

I am 29 years old and my gynocologist found a non-cancerous tumor. He said it's too big to cut out by laser in surgery and wants to give me a shot for three months (once a month) of Depo Lupron. I have been reading about some horrible side effects. He said the shots will hopefully shrink the tumor so he can remove it. Are there any other alternatives? I still want to have one more child. Please give advice.

i am 27 yrs old and i had surgery a couple of months ago to remove a large mass of endometriosis on my right side. now my left side is very painful. the clear thing to do would be to go in and remove the problem since the surgery worked on the other side but my insurance is refusing to cover it. so my doctor wants to put me on depo-lupron but i am very reluctant because of all the side effects i have heard of. i cant afford to gain weight because i am very much over weight and i am on the atkins program and doing quit well. i have asthma and i must get the weight off. i have 4 children (2 my own , 2 under guardianship) and they are all under 4yrs old which keeps me very busy. Depo-lupron doesnt sound like something that would benefit me but i cant seem to get my doctor to understand that.does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? i am new to this website so i hope i posted this in the right area...if not i am truly sorry.

I am supposed to start these injections and you women are scaring me!!

Did you women who have done the Depo Lupron also take Aygestin to counteract the symptoms of menopause?

Also, does anyone know if the Aygestin will deter the weight gain as well? Does everyone gain weight on the Depo?
