Is it thin or does it have a consistancy? If it is thin, it is probably just blood. The first and last amts of blood in your period can very well look brown looking.

I'm not a doctor, but I always heard that brown discharge is the extra "gunk" left over from your previous period. When you get that before your period, it's your body "cleaning the pipes" before the new period begins. Don't quote me on that, but I think it's a good explanation. Maybe someone with medical experience can validate or shed some light on this??

EddieDean, I agree. I have been told the same thing. I also get it before my period actually starts. Of course periods on my end are a bit scarce these days.

Good luck

Susan

hello, this past week I've been experiencing the brown discharge thing...I'm 22 and never have experienced this before. I started taking accutane about 45 days ago and am wondering if anyone knows if they are related? Otherwise, my periods have always been irregular, so it could just be that weirdness too. Thanks, Anne

My period does some crazy things and today i had my first session of acupuncture to see if it will get my hormones in order.

The acupuncturist confirmed what EddieDean said, that brownish discharge/bleeding/spotting at the start of a period is usually old blood left over.

That's normal, it's just your body cleaning everything up I think.

Why are you all freakin out?

It's perfectly normal, I've been having it for years!

Brown blood is dead blood, meaning whether you are aware of it or not, it has been exposed to air already!

Brown discharge, whether it be the consistency of blood or actual discharge, happens before and/or after most menstrual periods! Your body is either just getting ready to shed the lining of the uterus and has started a little bit early, or you stopped wearing tampons thinking it was over but there is a little bit still shedding!

You're all fine!

Hi, It happens to me all the time. It's just blood left over from your last period. If your that worried go to your doctor. Becky

No no no...

If it was left over blood from your last period, why would it only decide to come out when your next period is due?
That doesn't make any sense!

Your period is the shedding of the lining of your uterus, so think about that when you're trying to figure out why this is happening!

If you're worried, ask your doctor!
